ASU will go shopping for starting QB in transfer portal. Who are the top options? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The transfer portal officially opens on Friday, and Arizona State will be one of the many teams searching for a new starting quarterback.

As it became clear Sam Leavitt and ASU were headed for a split, head coach Kenny Dillingham made it clear the program would “100%” look to the portal for a new starter, leaning on one of his motto’s for the program in the qualities he’d seek out.

“Guys that are smart, guys that are tough, guys that take care of the football and guys that are about the team,” Dillingham said on Dec. 16. “Smart, tough, the ball, the team.”

The big question is whether ASU would prefer a stopgap option or a longer term one, knowing Cam Dyer and Jake Fette will be waiting in the wings.

To that point, there’s a good chance the Sun Devils go after two quarterbacks so if a backup has to go in, it’s someone who has some college playing experience already.

Dyer was expected to get his first college snaps in Wednesday’s Sun Bowl, but with how effectively Jeff Sims was playing and how close the contest was, there wasn’t an opportunity for the freshman. Fette joined the team for its practices upon arriving in El Paso, his hometown.

Without knowing exactly how ASU wants to move through this process, let’s take a look at some of the top options when it comes to starting signal-callers.
