The dawn of the new year also brings with it some exciting series returns from The Traitors to The Night Manager, as well as a brand new David Attenborough documentary focused on London's wildlife. That's not forgetting a new Harlan Coben thriller that's landed on Netflix, as well as a brand new one-off comedy from Paddy Houlihan.
With plenty to watch on terrestrial TV as well as the streamers, it can often be hard deciding what to nestle down with and watch but that's where we've done the hard work for you. Read on to find out what's worth watching this New Year's Day.
Minions: The Rise of Gru (BBC One, 10:40am)
With Julie Andrews also popping back up as Gru's mum, it's one hell of a voice cast. The film makes the most of its 70s setting, throwing in blaxploitation vibes, Ramones-flanked anarchy and an enjoyable Rolling Stones cover from the little yellow fellas. While the story feels very familiar, the film plays winningly to its target audience and does a decent job of proving there's life in this franchise yet. - Emma Simmonds
The Sound of Music (BBC One, 3:15pm)
It still looks lovely, in particular the stunning opening panoramic sweep onto the mountain top and the Do Re Mi tour around Salzburg (location-scouted by the uncredited musical genius Roger Edens), and the Rodgers and Hammerstein score is as refreshing as ever. For those who have never seen it, do. For those who love it, no persuasion is needed - it's as fresh and as magical as Andrews's smile. - Tony Sloman
Wild London (BBC One, 6:30pm)
"Whether it’s herds of deer invading gardens, pigeons commuting by tube, snakes slithering along Regent's Canal, parakeets raiding green spaces, or seagulls learning new ways to make a killing in the city, Sir David reveals the incredible wild encounters to be experienced across his hometown," the synopsis reads.
The Traitors season 4 (BBC One, 8pm)
Still, nothing quite beats seeing a raft of civilians trying to suss out who is a Traitor or Faithful in the fittingly moody castle setting, with Claudia Winkleman providing plenty of meme-able moments in due course, we're sure.
Red Eye season 2 (ITV1, 9pm)
One of ITV's top 10 dramas of last year, this new season will follow DS Hana Li and Compston's guest character, who are forced to "set aside past differences to solve a new high-stakes conspiracy".
The Night Manager season 2 (BBC One, 9:05pm)
Other returning faces include Olivia Colman (The Crown) as Angela Burr, Alistair Petrie (Sex Education) as Sandy Langbourne, Douglas Hodge (Joker) as Rex Mayhew, Michael Nardone (Traces) as Frisky and Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) as Daniel Roper. New faces also include Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & The Six), Indira Varma (Doctor Who), Paul Chahidi (Wicked Little Letters), and Hayley Squires (Adult Material).
Shedites (BBC One, 10:05pm)
The synopsis reads: "It’s a place where men make themselves useful building and repairing things, and along the way find company through unlikely friendships, a sense of purpose, and a mug of strong tea.
"For many, the men’s sheds offer a new lease of life, and the Rathbowen shed is no exception."
Run Away (Netflix)
Simon's search crosses over with an ongoing missing person's investigation that Elena (Ruth Jones) is looking into, with this series including the kinds of twists that keep you hooked till the very end. Like his previous shows, you won't be able to guess the outcome of it – but that's the fun of this New Year's Day binge-watch.
