Tennessee lost the Music City Bowl in crushing fashion on Tuesday night, and a day later the Volunteers are apparently about to lose a potential key piece to their future offensive line.
Redshirt freshman interior offensive lineman Max Anderson is planning on entering the transfer portal when it officially opens on Friday, his agent, Miles Jordan of Jordan Sports Group, told Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of CBS Sports on Wednesday afternoon.
The 6-foot-5, 311-pound behemoth was a 4-star recruit, so he came to Knoxville with a lot of potential and a lot of expectations. Anderson played 15 career games for Tennessee across 2 seasons, rotating at center, right guard and left guard for Josh Heupel‘s program. Now, he’s apparently heading elsewhere to start fresh for the 2026 season and will have 3 seasons of eligibility remaining, wherever he lands for next fall.
Anderson took a redshirt during the 2024 season.

— Chris Hummer (@chris_hummer) December 31, 2025Even though Anderson played all 13 games for the Vols this season, a lot of his playing time was on special teams, so obviously his desire to head elsewhere is tied to being on the field more in 2026.
The Frisco, Texas, product was ranked 284th overall and 18th among interior offensive lineman in addition to being a 4-star recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Anderson chose Tennessee over SEC rival Oklahoma, where older brother Nate Anderson was playing at the time of his decision.
