ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As 2025 comes to a close with freezing temperatures, the Open Door Mission’s efforts to help the community have become more urgent.
The shelter typically accommodates about 50 people, but when temperatures drop below freezing, they increase capacity to house up to 99 individuals.
The clothing room is currently seeking donations of women’s undergarments, winter clothing, boots, and kids’ clothing ranging from toddlers to teenagers.
“When you see some of our guests, or those in need, when they walk through the door, when they see what we’ve set up just for them, it’s just breathtaking just to see the expressions on their faces,” Robert Williams, Open Door Mission Vice President of Operations, said.
Kamika Dash, who once relied on the clothing room, now helps lead it as the Clothing Room Coordinator.
“I wanted people to have the same experience of coming into a store although they are not paying for these items,” Dash said. “They are given to them and are for free.”
Visitors to the clothing room can also receive hygiene items like body wash, floss, and toothpaste.
“We want to be a holistic place because not only do you need the clothes, but you need to clean up to put the clothes on. You need shoes, you need socks,” Dash said.
Williams said he wants to provide the same joy to people he experienced as a kid during the holidays.
“If we can bring that joy to a family or to a family member during this time of the year, then that’s what we’re here for,” he said.
Donations can be made to the clothing room at 20 Plymouth Avenue, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Open Door Mission accepts men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing year-round for any season.
