Tuolumne, CA — An investigation led to the arrest of a man in Tuolumne for stealing packages from a mailbox on Canyonview Drive.
The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office reports that the crime was witnessed by a neighbor, and the suspect left the scene in a white van. The owner later provided photographs of a white van that were taken from a surveillance video.
Deputies searched the area but could not locate the suspect’s vehicle. The following day, officials received a report of the van being spotted in the Ponderosa Hills area. They located it and pulled over the driver, 54-year-old Walter Thomas Watson, who admitted to stealing the packages.
The Sheriff’s Office reports, “During a search of Watson’s vehicle, deputies located one of the stolen items, suspected methamphetamine, and a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine.”
Continuing, “A records check revealed Watson had two prior theft convictions, qualifying the current petty theft charge as a felony due to changes in the law under Proposition 36, which was approved by California voters in 2024.”
The investigation later led them to Watson’s home, where the remaining stolen items were recovered, with the exception of some clothing items he was wearing.
Watson was arrested and transported to the Dambacher Detention Center on a list of related charges.
The Sheriff’s Office concludes, “We appreciate our community members for their vigilance, which assisted deputies in identifying and locating the suspect. We continue to encourage community members to remain alert and report suspicious activity.”
