From snow to bitter cold wind chills, the New Year’s Eve forecast will look dramatically different from the last holiday forecast.
While the Christmas holiday saw unseasonably warm temperatures, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will be significantly colder.
Snow, which may mix with some rain at the start, is expected to arrive in the afternoon hours and continue through the early evening, just in time for rush hour commuters.
According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman, the snow will likely start after 12 p.m. and move out of most of the area by 8 p.m. There is potential for “maybe a brief burst of moderate snow,” but overall the system is expected to stay light.
Like Tuesday, the accumulations aren’t expected to amount to much, with totals of up to or around an inch possible across the area. The highest totals are expected north of Interstate 80.
“This is not a lot, maybe up to an inch at most,” Roman said.
While temperature highs will sit in the 30s during the day, the snow will usher in a cold front that will send temperatures much lower for New Year’s Eve revelers.
Temps are expected to fall into the 20s and upper teens by midnight, with wind chills in the single digits and possibly even near 0 degrees.
According to Roman, in Chicago, temperatures at midnight look to sit around 16 degrees, with feels like temperatures sitting around 4 degrees.
New Year’s Day looks to stay cold, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team, with highs sitting near 20 degrees.
