CSU Rams fall to 0-2 in Mountain West Conference play with loss to Nevada ...Saudi Arabia

FORT COLLINS — Despite one of its better defensive efforts of the season, poor shooting led to a 75-62 loss to Nevada for the Colorado State men’s basketball team Tuesday night at Moby Arena.

CSU fell to 9-4 overall and 0-2 in Mountain West Conference play after shooting only 37% from the field against the Wolf Pack.

The offensive woes were felt all over as the Rams made only 18 of 29 free throws and 8 of 22 3-pointers. CSU also played without leading scorer Kyle Jorgensen, who was injured in the team’s last game against Utah State and will likely miss multiple weeks. Rashaan Mbemba was also still out but could return within the next few games.

“We didn’t run to the fight,” CSU head coach Ali Farokhmanesh said. “I think you could tell in the first part of the game, the way we turned the ball over, it was like we weren’t running to the ball, and we had some people that weren’t coming back to it. I thought that kind of set the tone to start the game and put us in a hole. But our response was great. I honestly thought that was probably our best defensive effort.”

The Rams held the Wolf Pack to 42% shooting from the field and outrebounded them 36-34. However, CSU gave up 21 second-chance points and had multiple long stretches without scoring.

Every time the Rams did make a run to make the game close or even take a brief lead, Nevada found a way to pull away again.

“I thought a big piece of the game was every time we had those chance to get a kill or to get that stop that we needed, they made a play and they scored off of it,” Farokhmanesh said.

CSU trailed 37-36 at the beginning of the second half, but Nevada quickly took the lead back and held it for most of the final 20 minutes. At one point in the early portion of the second half, the Rams went six a half minutes without a field goal as Nevada went ahead 48-41 with 12:40 left in the game.

The Rams fought back and after pulling within two a couple of times, they took their first lead since early in the second half on a 3-pointer by Josh Pascarelli that gave them a 57-56 advantage with 7:18 to play.

“When Josh hit it, I looked at him and was like, ‘We needed that. We’re about to go on a run,’ ” Rechsteiner said. “We didn’t.”

The Wolf Pack answered Pascarelli’s 3-pointer with a 13-0 run to go ahead 69-57 with just under a minute to play while holding the Rams scoreless for more than six minutes again. After the Rams stopped that run, Nevada was able to hold on for the 13-point victory.

Jevin Muniz led the Rams with 15 points. Brandon Rechsteiner added 14. Carey Booth led CSU on the glass with 10 rebounds. He also had six blocks.

CSU trailed for most of the first half. Nevada opened the game with an 8-2 run. The Rams didn’t make a field goal until Augustinas Kiudulas made a layup just over four minutes into the contest that cut the Wolf Pack lead to 8-4.

The Rams took their first lead of the game at 26-25 on a dunk by Nikola Djapa with 5:10 left in the period. The Rams’ largest lead of the first half was three points, 32-29, on a layup by Booth with 2:52 remaining.

After a pair of free throws by Pascarelli the Rams led 36-34, but Nevada’s Tyler Rolison made a 3-pointer to put the Wolf Pack ahead 37-36 with 31 seconds on the clock and they took that lead into the break.

Rechsteiner led the Rams with 11 points in the first half on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Muniz had eight points in the opening period. The Rams outshot the Wolf Pack 44.4%-43.3% and outrebounded them 18-14 in the first 20 minutes.

CSU will be back in action Saturday at Grand Canyon looking for their first conference win after back-to-back losses to open league play.

“We can’t look at it too crazy,” Muniz said. “It’s two losses. We’ve got to bounce back. We’ve got to reset and go play Grand Canyon now. We’ve just got to get everyone together and reset. We’ll be fine.”

. The Rams’ next home game is next Tuesday against New Mexico at 7 p.m. at Moby Arena.
