Greeley records its driest start to winter this decade ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

With only 2 inches of recorded snowfall in Greeley in December, the city is looking at its driest start to winter this decade.

On Dec. 3, Greeley received 2 inches of snowfall, the only snowfall the city has seen so far this winter season, according to National Weather Service data collected at the University of Northern Colorado, .

It is currently a La Nina year, where weather patterns typically keep Northern Colorado warmer and drier at lower altitudes. Kenley Bonner, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Boulder, said it has typically been La Nina years that bring about warm winters.

Though it did not snow in December last year, it did snow 4.9 inches in November 2024, making this year the lowest amount of snowfall to start the winter season this decade.

“We are off to a slow start, for sure,” Bonner said.

The city recorded 10 record-high temperatures this month: 64 degrees on Dec. 9, 71 on Dec. 11, 67 on Dec. 15, 66 on Dec. 19, 64 on Dec. 20, 70 on Dec. 22, 68 on Dec. 23, 63 on Dec. 24, 68 on Dec. 25 and 64 on Dec. 27.

Last year, Greeley had no snowfall in December but had a total snowfall of just over 14 inches for the 2024-2025 winter season.

The 2019-2020 winter total was reported at 42.7 inches, and snowfall has been decreasing since. The 2023-2024 season was at 28.7 inches, and the 2022-2023 total was 33.8 inches — although some snowfall totals are missing from the National Weather Service data.

According to National Weather Service data, Greeley usually gets the majority of its snowfall from January to March.

“We still have plenty of time for us to get some pretty decent snowstorms,” Bonner said.

National Weather Service forecasts only go out seven days, and though there are low snowfall amounts in the forecast for higher elevations, it does not look like Greeley will be getting any snow for the coming week.

A monthly precipitation outlook from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts equal chances of above or below normal temperatures and precipitation for January.

If the lack of precipitation continues, drought conditions for Greeley will get worse. The city is currently labeled as being abnormally dry, according to drought.gov/states/colorado.

The forecast for Wednesday and Thursday include mostly sunny skies and mostly cloudy skies, respectively, with above-average high temperatures of 56 on both days.
