During a Q&A episode of The Real Brady Bros. podcast, Knight, now 68, said his mother’s views about the show were in line with those of his co-star Robert Reed’s, in that she had issues with the characters and believability of the scripts.
Knight also noted that the happy Brady family was not a reflection of what was going on in his real-life home. “I think that our family wasn’t working really well… the Bradys was,” he shared. “It took me years to understand that, wait a second, there's nothing wrong with this thing. It's just aspirational. Even if it isn't real, if you want to take that as a premise, then this is really, you know, too good to be true, what's wrong with too good to be true? I mean, it's what we all react to in our programming around Christmas time…and all the programs are uplifting and aspirational, and there is a place for that. There just wasn't in her world.”
“So she was discounting whatever was good about it,” he added. “I do know that she had issues in her relationship with my own father that seemed to suggest that she would have liked life more like the Bradys. … It was a challenge to live in these two environments, competing.”
During an appearance on Oprah: Where Are They Now?, he said his family was “nothing like The Brady Bunch.” “Matter of fact, they hated it. My mom hated The Brady Bunch,” he said. "My mom was an artist, and my dad was a stage actor. Television was just a place you had to go to earn some money because real actors worked on stage."

Knight said The Brady Bunch gave his family “the resources to pay the rent.” “So, I mean, it would have been, I do believe... that my folks would have not existed much longer,” he added. “I mean, it would have gone to that point.
