No. 14 Alabama men’s basketball pummeled the Yale Bulldogs on Monday, despite the absence of star guard Labaron Philon Jr.
Fellow star guard Aden Holloway stepped up in Philon’s absence with 26 points on 9/15 shooting and 5/10 from 3-point range. Four other Crimson Tide players scored double figures, and guards Jalil Bethea and Latrell Wrightsell Jr. combined for 30 points off the bench.
“Obviously, Labaron [Philon Jr.] is super talented, but we were able to play pretty well without him, particularly on the offensive end,” head coach Nate Oats said postgame. “I mean, we had three guys make four or more threes.”
Oats told Crimson Tide Sports Network pregame that Philon is suffering from a left leg injury he picked up against Kennesaw State. Philon started in every game he appeared in during non-conference play, and has averaged 21.9 points per game on 55.1% shooting this season.
There is optimism for Philon’s return against Kentucky in the team’s SEC opener on Saturday.
Oats said that Philon’s injury is “not super serious” and that it is “pretty likely” he plays on Saturday against Kentucky.
The Crimson Tide opened the game with a barrage of 3-pointers, starting 5/6 from beyond the arc. It finished the first half with 11 made 3-point shots at a 42.3% rate.
Forward Amari Allen led the Crimson Tide with 14 first-half points, including a triple just before the buzzer sounded. Despite a tough second-half that saw him score just 1 point, Allen had his best performance since suffering from a hip pointer injury in the loss to Arizona.
The offense continued for Alabama in the second half, knocking down a further 11 triples, albeit on a weaker 39.3% clip. Holloway continued his strong night with 16 points on 5/8 shooting and a strong 3/5 from 3-point range.
The Crimson Tide eclipsed the 100-point threshold for the fourth time this season, this time against a Yale team that began the season 11-1 and has made the NCAA tournament in three of the last four seasons.
“I think Yale is one of the best mid-major teams in the country,” head coach Nate Oats said postgame. “[Head coach] James Jones does a great job with that team. I’ve known him for a long time. You saw in the second half, we had a hard time guarding them once they got settled in.”
Alabama will return to the hardwood on Saturday against Kentucky at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m. CT and can be streamed on ESPN.
