IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — A vote is set for Tuesday, Dec. 30, on whether to build a new firehouse in the St. Paul Boulevard Fire District. The proposed $22 million project would replace the existing fire station on Cooper Road.
Firefighters have expressed concerns about the current building, stating its infrastructure is decaying and outdated. They also mentioned it does not meet national safety standards.
“It’s all about firefighter health and safety — and I really want to help those who help us,” Fire Chief Ken Stavalone said during a public meeting earlier this month. “These firefighters put their lives on the line every day, and I never want to have to worry that we’re not doing enough to keep them safe to do that job.”
The project would cost the average household about $62 more per year in taxes.
The bond referendum is set to take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the firehouse at 433 Cooper Road in Irondequoit.
The fire chief’s presentation about the firehouse project — including what the problems are with the current facility, how the needs were determined, and what the project that’s going to vote will include — can be viewed here.
