The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rated the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) pitch for the Ashes 4th Test as ‘unsatisfactory’. This comes after the AUS vs ENG Boxing Day Test was wrapped up within just days, with 20 wickets falling on just Day 1 of the contest. As a result of the rating, the MCG has now received one demerit point.

MCG pitch rated unsatisfactory

As per an ICC release, the match referee Jeff Crowe noted that that MCG pitch had favoured the bowlers overwhelmingly, noting that 20 wickets had fallen on Day 1 of the AUS vs ENG 4th Test while 16 had fallen on Day 2. There are four categories of the pitch rating – very good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory and unfit. The Ashes 4th Test marked the second game in the tour which concluded in just 2 days after the 1st Test in Perth earlier in November.

“The MCG pitch was too much in favour of the bowlers. With 20 wickets falling on the first day, 16 on the second day and no batter even reaching a half-century, the pitch was ‘Unsatisfactory’ as per the guidelines and the venue gets one demerit point,” Crowe was quoted as per the release.

ICC pitch rating rules explained

As per the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, a pitch or outfield is rated as being substandard, that venue will be allocated a number of demerit points. One demerit point will be awarded to venues whose pitches are rated by the match referees as ‘Unsatisfactory’, while three demerit points will be awarded to venues whose pitches are marked as ‘Unfit’.Demerit points will remain active for a rolling five-year period. When a venue accumulates six demerit points (or crosses that threshold), it will be suspended from hosting any international cricket for a period of 12 months, while a venue will be suspended from staging any international cricket for 24 months when it reaches the threshold of 12 demerit points.
