Multiple homes were damaged when a reported tornado tore through a central Illinois community on Sunday afternoon, as shown in images posted on social media.
Photos posted on X captured extensive damage in the community of Mount Zion, about 8 miles southeast of Decatur. Roofs were torn off multiple homes and debris was strewn in front yards as fire crews appeared to assess the damage.
At 3:29 p.m., the National Weather Service said a tornado was reported near Long Creek, moving east at 45 miles per hour, and urged residents to take shelter.
The tornado remained on the ground roughly three minutes later as it continued to move eastward. A tornado warning was initially in effect but expired at 4:15 p.m.
The severe weather threat was expected to continue into the evening as a line of thunderstorms moved east at around 50 miles per hour, according to the NWS. The storms in question could produce large hail, lightning and damaging winds, meteorologists said.
