Lardis’ Moment, Nestrašil’s On Fire, Spellacy’s Role, Behm Hat Trick, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Let’s talk a little more about last night’s exciting 4-3 shootout win in Dallas. Nick Lardis only skated 10:16 in regulation and overtime, during which he was credited with two shots on net, one (big, timely) blocked shot and three hits. When the Blackhawks called his name to be the fourth shooter in the skills competition with a chance to win the game, he came thru against one of the best goalies in the league.

Lardis got his moment — something goal scorers want. And he made it count. The Blackhawks played a very good road game against one of the best teams in the entire NHL coming out of the Christmas break without a morning skate and come home with a win. The importance of that performance cannot be overstated.

Of course now the Blackhawks have to come home and host Sidney Crosby and the Penguins tonight. Never an easy task. As many of the Blackhawks players and coaches have been saying a lot lately, this is an every night league. And the next night isn’t easy. But the Blackhawks should be proud of their Saturday night effort.

After some rough starts, the predictable heat was on Arvid Söderblom. Plenty of comments about him not being good enough to be the backup on an NHL team. So let’s take a moment to give him his flowers today because he was terrific last night. Congrats to Ilya Mikheyev and his wife on the birth of their first child, a daughter. He was with them and not the Blackhawks on Saturday in Dallas, which makes the recall of Landon Slaggert make more sense. Slaggert drew into the lineup on a line with Tyler Bertuzzi and Jason Dickinson to start and that line was great the entire game. As the game was about to begin, Darren Pang said on the broadcast that captain Nick Foligno could return as soon as today against the Penguins. Before the World Juniors began, I predicted Václav Nestrašil could be a breakout star of the tournament. Well, his first two games have been nothing short of brilliant. He scored his first goal of the tournament last night — the game-winner — and added an assist for a second multi-point game in as many appearances. Czechia ran away with a blowout win over Denmark.

— BlackhawksFocus (@FocusBlackhawks) December 28, 2025 Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff named Nestrašil as one of his standout performers on the second day of the World Juniors. Here’s what Ellis wrote about Nestrašil’s performance on Saturday:

Nestrasil had himself a game. He looked good against Canada, but was even better today with a goal and an assist. Nestrasil is such an imposing figure – he routinely dominates older competition in college, and it almost feels like he’s playing a step above here. Blackhawks fans: listen to the hype. Nestrasil is legit.

Here’s Nestrašil talking about the first game of the tournament with Lizz Child of FloHockey.com. I love how he wants to deflect everything to talk about the team and not himself. Terrific read here from Scott Powers at The Athletic on how AJ Spellacy being self aware makes him dangerous. The guy who was getting D1 offers to play football and models his game after Tom Wilson knows that being hard to play against is what will get him to the NHL. He’s putting that approach on display for the USA at the World Juniors right now. I like this comment from Mark Eaton to Powers:

“I know everybody, it’s human nature, wants to contribute offensively, and at the junior level, he should,” Blackhawks assistant general manager of player development Mark Eaton said. “He should be a guy that Windsor looks to add to the offense, not just be one-dimensional.

“But I think our conversations with him are just to make sure that he knows what his identity truly is and what his path to success at the NHL level is. He’s such a good skater. He’s a big, athletic kid, doesn’t shy away from contact. He’ll stand up for teammates. I think that’s the niche to the key to his success.”

Spellacy’s performance in the first game earned him a bump from the fourth line up to the second for the USA last night against Switzerland at the World Juniors. His line got the start for the Americans and saw the most frequent action in a 2-1 win.

A.J. Spellacy knows exactly what he is as a player. It’s why he’s playing for the U.S. in the World Junior Championship now. It’s why he has a chance with the Blackhawks in the future. My story on him t.co/8I9FiBvBcb

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) December 27, 2025 The WHL was back in action last night. Nathan Behm had a hat trick and two assists for a five-point night in a 9-5 win for Kamloops. Yes, I said five points! Here are all three of Behm’s goals:

— Fargo Force (@FargoForce) December 28, 2025 For those wondering (and I’ve had a few DMs over the past couple days), it appears the Blackhawks plan on practicing Monday despite coming out of the Christmas break with a back-to-back including travel between games. We’ll see if a good performance again tonight changes that plan, but the players did just have three days off.

The Blackhawks will practice Monday — even coming off a back-to-back —  just because it's their only window to do so. That's a first for me covering this team.Blashill: "What happens when you don't practice is you lose those habits and structure." t.co/37BXQpkrCq

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 28, 2025 The Tampa Bay Lightning announced an eight-year extension with forward J.J. Moser that has a $6.75M cap hit. The Montreal Canadiens announced forward Jake Evans will miss 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury. The New York Islanders announced goaltender Ilya Sorokin has been placed on IR (retroactive to Dec. 20). Finally, this is the most awesome thing you’ll see on ice this weekend.
