His parents have tried to give him as normal an upbringing as possible but Prince George appears to be taking his first big steps in training for his life as a future King.
Even before he becomes George VII, he will have a vital role to play in a slimmed-down monarchy in which Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, will be supported by a much smaller cast of working royals than exists now.
William, 43, wants what is already an increasingly social activist monarchy to change Britain for the better while staying above party politics.
And, while George will inevitably be left to develop his own approach inside the Firm – the royals are all about authenticity – his parents appear to have stepped up their efforts to introduce him to the causes close to their hearts in the past few months.
Few 12-year-olds have their lives mapped out in front of them and even fewer would probably want it but such is the fate of a direct heir in a constitutional monarchy.
So it was that earlier this month, George accompanied his father on a visit to meet homeless people, those supporting them and help preparations for a Christmas lunch at the London base of The Passage.
William first began visiting the charity in Victoria with his mother, Diana, when he was 11.

But, it was a tightly-controlled event with no media invited – a sign of how much protection the Prince and Princess of Wales want to give their children from the sort of intense press scrutiny that William and his brother, Harry, endured when they were younger.
“It was important to the Prince of Wales to share with Prince George the work of The Passage and to spend time volunteering alongside the team,” a Kensington Palace spokesman said.
George’s thoughtful introduction to the responsibilities that await him has been gradual. But in the past few months he has taken a noticeable step up, joining his parents at a military flypast and Buckingham Palace tea party for veterans on the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May. He also attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time last month.

The five-year project is designed to showcase how homelessness can be ended, or at least made brief and unrepeated, using early intervention to prevent those at risk ending up on the street or couch surfing for years.
His efforts to transform the way Britain approaches some social and environmental problems, or generational issues such as the mental health crisis affecting young people, herald a growing emphasis on “impact” for the monarchy but also channel Diana’s legacy.
“When I was very small, my mother started talking about homelessness, much like I do now with my children on the school run,” William said. He set out his own objectives in an interview in Singapore two years ago, noting that his family had done a brilliant job in highlighting problems.
“I want to go a step further: I want to actually bring change and I want to bring people to the table who can do the change if I can’t do it,” he said.

He hopes George and his other children will take a similar interest in the social problems he wants to solve.
“I think he is really trying to bring George into his world, as his mother did with him,” the royal biographer Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said, recalling how Diana instilled a social conscience in both of her boys.
“She used to say to them: ‘Not everyone has a Range Rover and a country house.’”

Seward sees George’s introduction to homelessness as a smart move that helps to highlight the cause and promote the monarchy but also a genuine attempt by William to prepare his son for his future role.
“I think it’s 50:50,” she said. “I think William is very conscious of doing the right thing and being seen to do the right thing. Also William is quite green and woke himself.”
He and Kate have been highly protective, disclosing fewer details about their children than earlier generations of royals.

They will probably want them to have military or other careers before a life of duty but, at the very least, it will be another decade or more before George undertakes official engagements on his own.
Sally Bedell Smith, an American royal biographer, contrasted the late Queen Elizbeth’s introduction to public life, noting that she had tea with Indian princes when she was four and was undertaking quite serious duties by the time she was 12 or 13.
“She was very precocious and very assured,” she said. “She was meeting the American ambassador, Joe Kennedy. She was 14 when she sat in front of a microphone and broadcast to the children of the Empire.”
