The UK looks set to see in the New Year on a cold note, with wintry showers and overnight frosts in the forecast.
After a few days of dry conditions, the Met Office has said it will start to feel chillier as we head towards 2026.
Tom Morgan, a Met Office meteorologist, said: “Towards Tuesday and more especially Wednesday, it could turn a bit colder and that could allow a few wintry showers to move down across more north eastern areas.”
An area of low pressure is expected to sweep in from the North Sea bringing with it a period of wetter and windier weather, particularly in the north and with cold air close to the UK, some “wintry hazards are possible in places”.
And as January begins, more settled conditions with colder and drier than average conditions are on the cards across the UK.
Forecasters say there will, however, be some periods of rain or showers and windier spells.
Those heading out for New Year fireworks and celebrations should wrap up warm as temperatures are expected to drop to below average for this period overall and wintry hazards remain a possibility in places.

“The cloud is likely to bring some light rain and drizzle across parts of northern England and eastern Scotland, particularly over the higher ground of the Pennines and the southern uplands,” said Mr Morgan.

— Met Office (@metoffice) December 27, 2025There will be a north-easterly breeze running down the eastern coast making it feel chilly on Saturday and it will be much windier in the South than Boxing Day, with gusts of 30-40mph across the Welsh mountains and the moors in the South West.
Temperatures will range between 9C in the far south and 5C in the north of Scotland.
Patchy rain and drizzle is expected to make its way slowly across northern England and the Midlands during Saturday.
Overnight frosts and freezing fog patches are likely for parts of northern and western Scotland through to Sunday morning, with the risk of poor visibility.

“Sunday will start on a pretty grey note for many of us, whether its fog or whether is low cloud,” said Mr Morgan. “It will stay quite dull through much of the day on Sunday.
“Overall temperatures reaching highs of between 5 and 7C and it won’t be as windy in the South on Sunday so it won’t feel quite as cold.”
The final few days of December 2025 are set to remain “generally dry, fine and settled” as high pressure remains dominant across the UK but it will be cloudy with the best of any sunshine in the North and the West.
It will be dull end to the year which was declared the sunniest on record by the Met Office.
Record number of sunshine hours
This year has officially been the sunniest on record, according to the Met Office.
The UK recorded 1,622 hours of sunshine up until 15 December, beating its previous sunniest year set in 2003 in a series which dates back to 1910.
Mike Kendon, Met Office Senior Scientist, said: “The record-breaking sunshine across the UK this year was driven by the frequent influence of high pressure that reduced cloud cover and brought sunny skies for many.
“Spring was exceptional, and many will remember the long spells of days with largely unbroken sunshine.
“It began with the third-sunniest March on record, followed by a record-breaking sunniest April and then the second-sunniest May.
“All three months of the summer also saw above-average sunshine hours and while sunny periods are not unusual at this time of year, the duration and consistency of high-pressure systems made 2025 notably sunnier than average.
“So far this year, only the months of February and October have recorded below-average sunshine hours.”
