Some airline passengers planned to celebrate Christmas with loved ones but instead were forced to spend the holiday at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
Around 350 passengers who intended to travel on Qatar Airways flight 726 from O’Hare to Doha, Qatar, were stranded at the airport. After the original flight at 6:50 p.m. on Christmas Eve was cancelled, passengers said the airline kept telling them there were technical difficulties and they would provide updates.
By 1 a.m., the flight was canceled.
Passengers were told to come back the next day – on Christmas – at 3 p.m. But at 11 p.m., that flight was cancelled as well.
One passenger said she, her husband and two children returned home after the flights were canceled twice.
“We already lost two days yesterday, and today we were under a lot of pressure and lost a lot of money because we had to take a taxi to go home and come back,” Tania Salam told Telemundo Chicago.
Salam between the four tickets, accommodation and other expenses, her family lost around $15,000.
Another passenger shared that he lost much more than money.
“Money is just the beginning. The time that was lost, that wasn’t used to make this trip, you can’t put a price on that,” Muhammad Ashkar said. “I’m very disappointed.”
While the airline covered accommodations for some passengers, hotel stays weren’t provided for everyone. One traveler said she wasn’t given an accommodation because she lives in Illinois.
“I think I lost $2,000 to $3,000, in addition to the time I was going to spend with my family, that’s what bothers me the most,” said Laura.
To avoid significant losses incurred during trips, experts widely recommend having travel insurance. The Department of Transportation recommends keeping receipts, documenting cancellations and requesting refunds or compensation in writing directly from the airline.
According to the flight-tracking website Flightaware.com., the flight finally departed O’Hare at 7:12 p.m.
NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago reached out to Qatar Airways for specifics on the disruption, and while the airline said it received our message, it didn’t provide additional information as of late Friday.
