A veterinary student home for the holiday break was found dead after a night out with friends in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood.
Police are conducting a death investigation to figure out what happened as family and friends of Christian Law prepare for a funeral. They told NBC Chicago he had dreams of becoming a veterinarian and loved animals. He was well into his third semester at Ross University and looking forward to spending the holidays at home. His family said he had only been in town for about 24 hours when he was found dead in Chicago.
“It’s unreal that this has happened,” said his godmother, Kimberly Lightford. “We’re talking about a fine young man, I mean very disciplined. Very focused, kind, loving, pretty much did everything his mother told him to do—just all-around good guy.”
Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford is Law’s godmother and knew his father, who died from brain cancer. She and his family were left wondering what happened and whether anyone tried to harm him.“I know he wouldn’t hurt anybody, and for him to suffer that way is so hurtful,” she said.
According to family, Law was out with friends at Kashmir on the night of Dec. 13. He later ended up at a house party on Greenview Avenue.
The following morning, at around 7 a.m., a woman walking her dog discovered Law on the sidewalk. He didn’t have his coat and was pronounced at the hospital.
His family said police also questioned a friend who was with him that night.
Relatives said his phone, ID, and credit cards were initially missing but have since been recovered.
“Nothing is adding up,” Lightford said. “Absolutely nothing is making sense to his mom and to the rest of his family.”Law’s mom was too distraught to speak on camera. Lightford said they will continue to fight for answers in his case.
“We lost such an amazing person who had a lot to give to society. He will be missed tremendously,” she said. “I know that she’s [mom] is not going to stop until she gets justice for Christian.”
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Law’s cause and manner of death were still pending toxicology results and other tests as of Friday. Law was last seen alive on Greenview Avenue south of North Avenue and north of Division Street.
Anyone who captured Ring doorbell footage of Law or witnessed anything suspicious was asked to call police.
