ROCHESTER, N.Y. — While most people have the day off from work or school, the roads can still get busy the day after Christmas and the current weather conditions are making things tricky.
Since it is Friday, it’s likely a lot of folks can delay hitting the road until Saturday or Sunday. For those who do need to travel, take your time.
Road conditions
Plow drivers from local town and village DPWs are out trying to keep up with the roads. They’re getting constant updates from the Monroe County Emergency Management team which keeps track of conditions using a network of cameras, weather reports, and reports from first responders.
“Right now, we’re at advisory level criteria,” said Tim Henry, Monroe County Emergency Manager. “It doesn’t appear like it’s going to go to any warning level criteria. This is kind of what we would consider a run-of-the-mill kind of winter weather event for Rochester and Monroe County.”
As the News10NBC First Alert Weather team has reported, the conditions vary widely depending on where you live in the region. If you need to be out and about tonight, just take things slowly. See what our weather team is tracking here.
Despite concerns about a potential road salt shortage, Henry said local towns and villages were well-prepared.
“All of our towns and villages who contract for plowing all the county roads are in a good situation,” said Henry.
Air and train travel
News10NBC’s Kristi Blake was live at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport on Friday morning, tracking the latest. Dozens of people were lined up at the TSA check-in at 5 a.m. One family that we spoke with said they didn’t love waking up so early after Christmas, but they’re glad to be flying before the snowstorm arrives.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow was also live at the airport Friday afternoon tracking the latest. As of now, there are five delayed flights and four cancelled arrivals.
There are also three outgoing flights cancelled for Friday night, and about half a dozen delays. There are no train delays as of now, but there were some earlier Friday morning.
People told Stablow landing was the worst part of the trip.
“It was good until we started coming here with the snow. It was a lot of turbulence,” said Dr. Jonathan Wesley.
Sarah White, who was flying from Chicago, was surprised they only made it in 30 minutes later than expected.
“We flew through Chicago that had some fog and then obviously the snow here delayed things but somehow we’ve only made it in 30 minutes later so not too bad,” said White.
People Stablow spoke to Friday afternoon said compared to previous travel experiences, they all said it wasn’t the best, but certainly far from the worst.
