Truth be told, Team India’s victory in the Women’s World Cup has to be the biggest cricketing achievement for the nation in 2025. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team did the unthinkable, when they beat a tough South African team in the final in Navi Mumbai, on the night of November 2. And all that, when there were some reservations against the same happening, given the side’s form in the league stages, and just the tendency to crumble under pressure.
But after all, a win is a win, as it broke the trophy-less jinx for the women’s team in the ICC events. The euphoria can still be felt, the confidence is still palpable, and performances on the feel look elevated. Look at what the team is doing to Sri Lanka in T20Is; they are 2-0 up and have neither given any inch to the opponents in batting, nor in bowling.. that is not the point of this article.
It is more to discuss what the team did before the World Cup, during, and what improvements are needed going forward.

Prior to the big ICC tournament, India began 2025 with a three-match series against Ireland. There they won 3-0. Following that in April, after a gap of three months, they played a tri-series against Sri Lanka and South Africa; lost one match against the former, which gave an indication, that there were visible issues with the team.
Then, the three match series in England was largely successful with a largely favorable result of 2-1. The Australia series followed, where India managed to beat Alyssa Healy’s team after a gap of four years. But in a nutshell, there were issues with the fielding that needed to be addressed, and even batting, with a few players woefully out of form.
Women’s World Cup 2025 Arrives
India were never the favorites; they were a good side, who, if played well, would have entered the semis/finals by creating a couple of upsets. First up was Sri Lanka, where Amanjot Kaur pulled the team out of trouble with the bat. The next game vs Pakistan vs a relatively easy one, but a lot of catches were put down.
Post that came three back-to-back losses against South Africa, Australia & England, where it felt like, the team was getting in the same loop of not being able to handle the pressure. They had to win the remaining two fixtures to get in the semis, and the pressure of the home tournament was immense.
But the team did deliver against New Zealand and Bangladesh, and then history was scripted when they beat Aussies in the semis and SA in the final.
The Highs of Women’s World Cup
Deepti, Amanjot save India: In the opening match vs SL, India were reduced to 124/6 and could have very well been bundled out soon. But a certain Amanjot stood up and scored 57 from 56, Deepti Sharma made 53 lower down the order, with Sneh Rana chipping in with valuable 28 as India ended up with 269.

So it was youngster Kranti Gaud, who made her debut in May 2025, who returned with figures of 3/20. Eventually India won by 88 runs.
Richa Ghosh’s 94 goes in vain: Even though the SA match is a sore spot, but keeper Ghosh came up with an innings of a lifetime. Being 153/7, the hard-hitting batter scored 94 from only 77 deliveries, that took the team to 251. Eventually, India lost despite the opposition being 81/5.
Mandhana & Rawal go on a rampage: Both the Indian openers were due for big milestone, and they did deliver. They scored 109 and 122, respectively with Jemimah Rodrigues scoring 76. That took India to 340, and won by 53 runs in a rain-curtailed match.
Jemi show in Navi Mumbai: It just did not look like India could chase 339 vs AUS in semis. Just the pressure of that match is so much for India, but Jemimah came up with a knock of 127 from 134 deliveries, that instilled the belief in India, that they could win the cup. Harmanpreet Kaur yet again played a sensational knock of 89 vs Aussies, in a WC semis to end their hopes.
Shafali Verma the replacement: India were in a spot of bother with Pratika Rawal getting ruled out of the tournament. Replacement batter Verma didn’t promise much. But then on the night of final she scored 87 from 78, and also took two wickets to give India their maiden cup. Substantial contribution also came from Deepti Sharma, who bagged five wickets.
