He was the #4 seed in his Italian record of 50.42, swum last summer.
With no prelims scratches being done at this meet except for those that would reduce the number of heats (Icelandic swimmer was not on the start sheets for the women’s 200 free this morning, dropping the event from six heats to five), swimmers who opt to skip an event are leaving empty lanes. Top-six seeds Alessandra Mao (#6, 1:57.00) and Freya Anderson (#5, 1:57.00), were missing in the women’s 200 free heats in the event prior.
Ceccon finished 8th at the World Championships last year, clocking 51.12 in the final, but notched a new Italian record of 50.42 in the semi-finals to place 5th. That remains his only swim under 51 seconds.
He is the fastest Italian in the event so far this season, posting a 51.43 at the China Open in March. In his absence, Alberto Razzetti (51.70) and Michele Busa (51.82) moved through to the semi-finals.
Ceccon has already swum the 50 fly at this meet, placing 4th in a time of 22.72, just off the 22.71 he swam in the semi-finals. His lifetime best and Italian record stands at 22.67 from the World Championship final last year, where he won bronze.
His scratch this morning is likely made with the men’s 200 back final in mind. Ceccon progressed 8th out of the semi-finals last night, just off his Italian record of 1:55.71 with a 1:55.86, one of ten swims under the 1:56 barrier.
He still has entries remaining in tomorrow’s 50 back (24.95, #25 seed) and Friday’s 100 back (51.80, #1 seed). He owns the world record in the latter at 51.60, which he swam to win gold at the 2022 World Championships, and won silver at the 2025 World Championships in 51.90.
His season best in that event is just 53.16, although he does have just one swim so far this season and scratched the event at the Sette Colli Trophy at the end of June. Ceccon has stated that he has struggled to find motivation since his Olympic gold in the 100 back in Paris two years ago.
This scratch has possible ramifications for the men’s 4×100 medley relay on Sunday, in which Italy are medal favorites after finishing 4th at the 2025 World Championships. With Michele Lamberti a possible option on backstroke Ceccon could have moved to the fly leg, but that now seems unlikely with the better of the semi-finalists, Razzetti and Busa, probably getting the nod on the final day.
