ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The First Alert Weather team has issued a Yellow Alert for the day after Christmas. Before then however, the weather will be on the nice list…
Merry Christmas Eve! It’ll be a cold and breezy start and our high temperatures won’t get past the mid 30s, but the breeze will calm down as the day goes on. Partly cloudy skies abundant today… We dip into the upper 20s this evening and overnight and weather will be calm for Santa’s arrival.
Christmas day will start off mostly sunny with temperatures in the low 30s, then clouds fill in from the north and our highs reach the upper 30s. There is a chance for some passing snow showers in the afternoon mainly near the Finger Lakes, but only minimal accumulations at best. Dry elsewhere with light winds.
Friday we have a Yellow Alert up for impactful snowfall. A clipper system will punch down through the northeast, with the center of the heaviest snow passing right through Rochester. The system currently has still not emerged out from California where it will originate… So there is still a lot at play here and depending on where the system zeroes in will determine just how much snow we get. It will also determine whether we see any other kinds of precipitation. Sleet and freezing rain are a risk if the system goes more north. If it goes more south, expect less snowfall. The timing will be Friday afternoon through the night. Right now, we could be needing to plow around half a foot of snow. Stay tuned for updates.
Saturday is a good day to travel (once the snow has been plowed), but if you are flying to Boston or NYC in the morning you may still run into some issues if the storm is still ongoing there. Sunday a large low pressure system and attendant cold front pushes through, giving us milder temperatures and wind followed by heavy rain, some snow, and plummeting temperatures. Lake effect snow starts up behind it and may last into Tuesday.
Stay tuned for updates on the Friday storm and unsettled weather for the last week of 2025.
