City of Rochester issues water safety notice as it works to meet new lead filtration requirements ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

If you live in the City of Rochester, you may have received a letter recently about your water. The letter talks about the dangers of lead as the City works to make changes to its filtration system.

The State Department of Health and the EPA approved the city’s process for treating water for lead and copper back in the 1990s but now, they want the city to do something different and until Rochester meets that benchmark, it’ll have to issue these notices to all residents.

It basically comes down to how the city filters water before it gets to your tap. The city’s chief water engineer says he’s making the changes required by the state and the feds but in the meantime, the water remains safe.

David Rowley, Manager of Water Production, City of Rochester: “We’re required every 6 months to collect 100 samples from customer taps and in order to be in compliance with the rule, no more than 10% of those samples can be above 15 parts per million.” The city has always never exceeded that level. “Not a thing has changed with our water, not a thing has changed with the way we treat our water our lead results continue to be very good,” Rowley says.

But new federal regulations require the City filter for lead and copper differently. “We’re prepared for it and we’re already making progress toward alleviating and mitigating that violation,” Rowley says.

In the meantime, they’ll have to send a letter out with every water bill that gives residents steps you can take to minimize lead in water.

Those include:

– Using only cold water for drinking, cooking and preparing baby formula. Hot water dissolves lead more quickly.

– Flushing your pipes any time water has been unused for more than 4-6 hours. Lead levels are highest when the water has just been sitting in the pipe, so let it run for 3-5 minutes to ensure it’s flushed.

– Routinely clean faucet screens because they can accumulate lead particles.

– Use a water filter that is certified to remove lead.

The city has a number of tools on its website for residents can learn more about its water supply, filtration system and infrastructure.   Click here for more information.
