ESPN’s FPI has revealed who it believes has the better chance to survive an all-SEC steel-caged match, with the College Football Playoff as the backdrop.
On New Year’s Day night in New Orleans, very familiar foes will clash in the Sugar Bowl with a trip to the semifinals on the line. It’ll be No. 3 seed Georgia and No. 6 seed Ole Miss hooking up in primetime in an 8 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN. It’ll be a battle of 12-1 SEC rivals who’ll be meeting for the 2nd time this season, this time with everything on the line.
The first time the Dawgs and Rebels met, way back on Oct. 18 in Athens, Georgia handed Ole Miss its only loss of the season in a 43-35 shootout. Neither team has lost since that day at Sanford Stadium, but somebody is going to lose on New Year’s Day night and somebody’s season is going to come to a crushing, sudden end.
ESPN’s FPI believes that Georgia has the much better chance to come out of this alive. The FPI is giving the Bulldogs a 60.1% chance to beat the Rebels for the 2nd time this season and end Ole Miss’s magical run that began under Lane Kiffin and now is being led by new head coach Pete Golding.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart cautioned reporters during his press conference on Monday that the Ole Miss offense isn’t going to change much despite Kiffin not being there anymore. That Rebels offense put up a lot of points against the Dawgs a few months ago, but it wasn’t quite enough, and ESPN’s FPI is leaning toward Ole Miss not having quite enough again in the Playoff rematch.
