Vienna, Dec. 23 (SANA)The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) stressed that large-scale production of the narcotic Captagon in Syria has been disrupted, one year after the fall of the former regime. The office commended Syria and regional countries for their efforts in combating the scourge of drugs.
The Syrian government has dismantled 15 Captagon manufacturing facilities and 13 smaller storage sites since December 2024, According to the UN News Center, the UN office stated in a press release Monday.
The statement estimated that daily Captagon production in Syria under the former regime may have reached millions of tablets.
In this context, Bo Mathiassen, Director of Operations at UNODC, praised international cooperation through intelligence sharing and joint operations, which led to record drug seizures in 2025.
Mathiassen called for strengthening a comprehensive approach that includes evidence-based drug prevention, treatment, and recovery systems in the region, alongside continued enforcement and interdiction efforts.
Syrian authorities continue their anti-drug campaign, having seized and destroyed large quantities of narcotics in recent months. These substances were produced and promoted by the former regime within society and exported to neighboring countries and other regions worldwide. Dozens of individuals involved in trafficking this dangerous drug have also been arrested.
