A commitment to egg-cellence: NC farm supplies White House Easter Egg Roll ...Middle East

News by : (NC news line) -

Trey Braswell has been scrambling to get ready for the Easter holiday. He’s the president of Braswell Family Farms in Nashville, N.C., and for the fifth year running, he’s pledged to have 40,000 eggs ready for this year’s official White House Easter Egg Roll.

When you make a commitment this big, nothing can go wrong.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins visited the farm earlier this week to tour Braswell’s facilities, observe flocks of laying hens, and see the farm’s egg grading, processing and packaging operations.

Representatives from the American Egg Board, the American Farm Bureau Federation, North Carolina Farm Bureau, and the North Carolina Egg Association were also on hand for a roundtable discussion with Rollins about the challenges facing farmers, including input costs, labor, hen health and security.

For Braswell, there was no walking on eggshells. The fourth-generation farmer wanted Rollins to understand the hard work and long hours that go into running a family farm that got its start in 1943.

“There’s something special about knowing these eggs came from our farm and are headed to Washington, D.C.,” said Braswell in a statement. “We’re proud to raise them right here in North Carolina.”

After the eggs were poached from Braswell’s hens, they were off to the Triad, where each egg is carefully boiled and dyed in vibrant hues at The Stocked Pot in Winston-Salem. Patriotic colors are being emphasized this year as the White House event will also honor America’s 250th birthday.

President Rutherford B. Hayes gets credit for opening the White House grounds in 1878 for the first annual egg rolling event.

In 2025, a national egg shortage had some suggesting plastic eggs be used for the egg-stravaganza on the South Lawn. But the idea of an egg substitute had farmers steaming. In the end, 30,000 smaller eggs were provided for that event, carefully sourced to avoid disrupting the supply chain.

“America’s egg farmers are incredibly proud to help bring this cherished tradition to life each year,” said Emily Metz, president and CEO of the American Egg Board, the group that paid for the eggs. “As a legacy partner of the White House for the Easter Egg Roll, we’re thrilled that real eggs are at the heart of this iconic celebration.”

The average price for a dozen Grade A large eggs in the U.S. is approximately $2.50 this April. Consumers were cracking up a year ago when avian influenza sent retail prices soaring above $6 a dozen.

With better prices this spring, Americans are expected to decorate and consume about three billion eggs this Easter, according to the American Egg Board.

For Braswell, that’s a reason to keep the sunny side up.

The national Easter celebration in Washington, D.C. takes place on Monday, April 6.
