Bulls’ Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu Downgraded Ahead of Hawks Game ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

A game removed from fielding their healthiest roster yet this season in a surprising 136-125 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, the Chicago Bulls could be without both of their top two shooting guards — starter Coby White and reserve Ayo Dosunmu — in their Sunday matinee against the Atlanta Hawks.

Per the NBA’s most recent injury report, both young guards have been downgraded. White is now merely questionable thanks to a sore left ankle, while Dosunmu is considered probable to play through the two thumb sprains that held him out for three straight games before the Bulls’ Cleveland contest on Friday.

Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White Status

Both White and Dosunmu, on team-friendly expiring contracts, could become massive trade chips for Chicago as the league hurdles towards the Feb. 5 deadline. It seems likely that White and Dosunmu are in line for big pay bumps next summer, and it remains unclear how much of an appetite the Bulls’, er, cost-effective ownership group and their, um, transaction-averse front office has for retaining either 25-year-old at the price he’ll demand.

White should field a more robust market. Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer claimed ahead of the season that the 6-foot-45 North Carolina product is hoping to earn a yearly salary in the $30 million range. Even if he doesn’t quite get there, he could still at least come close to doubling his $12.9 million contract for 2025-26.

In his 11 healthy games this season for the 12-15 Bulls, White has been averaging 21.2 points on .440/.286/.818 shooting splits, 5.2 dimes, and 3.6 boards. That shooting number should rebound soon. While he’s not the entry passer Josh Giddey is, White is still a talented scorer with a good handle, possibly with room still to grow. He’ll get paid.

Dosunmu, meanwhile, is in the midst of a very efficient season, lingering thumb injuries or no. On a stunningly reasonable $7 million contract this year, the 6-foot-4 University of Illinois alum has been averaging 14.9 points while slashing an elite .516/.471/.842 line, plus 3.1 dimes, 2.6 rebounds, and 0.6 steals.

Along with Tre Jones, Dosunmu helps prop up Chicago’s perimeter defense with his critical bench minutes. He was held to a 24-minute restriction on Friday, but ultimately suited up for just 14 minutes, scoring eight points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field (2-of-5 from deep).

Other Absentee Bulls

Backup Bulls power forward/center Jalen Smith, meanwhile, apparently has incurred a left quadricep contusion. He, too, is still probable to suit up.

Two-way signings Lachlan Oblrich, Emanuel Miller, and Trentyn Flowers are all putting in reps with Chicago’s NBAGL affiliate in Hoffman Estates, the Windy City Bulls. Rookie forward Noa Essengue, the No. 12 pick in this past summer’s draft, will remain sidelined following a left shoulder surgery.

Atlanta’s Brief Injury Report

For the Hawks, only one rotation player, backup center Kristaps Porzingis, will be on the shelf. Porzingis has been diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which has impacted his availability since his ill-fated playoff run with the Boston Celtics last spring.

The one-time All-Star is set to miss the next two weeks or so of action while further testing is conducted on his health per Shams Charania and Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.

The action tips off on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CT. The 15-14 Hawks will be hosting the Bulls at State Farm Arena. Atlanta boasts a paltry 5-7 home record thanks to a fairly apathetic fanbase, while Chicago is just 5-9 on the road because, well, Chicago’s not very good.
