ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Behind the scenes at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), a 24/7 pharmacy fills nearly 3,500 prescriptions daily.

Shannon Martin, a technician supervisor at the pharmacy, has been working in the healthcare field since high school. She started at Rite Aid and the pharmacy before going to college for teaching. However, she ultimately decided that she enjoyed the healthcare field more than teaching.

“Growing up, you know, my family had cared for and adopted a lot of mentally handicapped kids. So I was always around it, health care and whatnot. And I kind of grew up in that household. My grandma watched me a lot, so I was always around that, and it kind of just inspired me,” Martin said.

In New York State, pharmacy technicians are not required to be certified. However, the University of Rochester requires all technicians to be certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) after a year.

URMC offers a 12-week Pharmacy Technician University program. This program temporarily takes participants out of the pharmacy workflow for training before they return to work.

The process of filling a prescription involves several steps, starting with receiving the prescription and ending with the medication being dispensed to the patient.

“We receive the prescription here. It will go through what’s called a pre-verification,” Martin said. “The prescription is going to be typed in that can be typed by a pharmacist, the technician. And in turn and then ultimately it gets to a pharmacist where they’re verifying which called the pre-verification. It will then get billed through insurance.”

If the medication is not covered by insurance, the university has different avenues, such as social work, to help get the medication covered and ultimately in the hands of the patient.

“From there, it’s going to come to our technicians that are filling in the background. They are going to fill count it. And then from there it’s going to go to a final verification to the patient, to the pharmacist. And then from there, it would ultimately be ready to dispense and get shipped to you, picked up to you. However you get it,” Martin said.

The university uses technology, such as the ScriptPro, to help fill the top 200 medications and ensure that there are no errors.

However, there are barriers that can impact patients, such as pharmacy deserts, where patients may not have a pharmacy close to them.

“It’s within the university where they will deliver to patients around the area. If somebody has a language barrier, we have translators who could help with that. Financial assistance is another one. We are able to reach to social work or whatnot to try to get those patients ultimately in the medications in the hands of the patients,” Martin said.
