Team USA Just Got Even More Stacked for the World Baseball Classic ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Because the event is held in the middle of Spring Training, it was always a pretty good bet that you would be able to get some of the best position players to represent your country in the World Baseball Classic. The games are more meaningful and more intense, but the injury risk isn’t fundamentally different.

But getting the best pitchers is a dramatically different story, given the nature of ramping up for a competitive season. Getting yourself into a position to max out your effort in early-to-mid-March, all ahead of a six or seven month MLB season, is a very tall ask. And a risky one.

Still, Team USA pulled off a coup when it got one of the two best pitchers on the planet, Paul Skenes, to agree to pitch for them next spring in the WBC.

Then today, the other best pitcher on the planet, Tarik Skubal, posted this:

Did it mean what it maybe seemed like it might mean? Was Tarik Skubal seriously ALSO going to pitch for Team USA?

Oh yes:

That’s actually pretty amazing, especially considering that Skubal is heading into his walk year ahead of what could be one of the largest pitcher free agency payouts ever.

The team got even more loaded today, by the way, because closer Mason Miller *ALSO* was named to the team. Joe Ryan, Nolan McLean, and Clay Holmes were recently announced, too, so you’re talking a pitching staff that is looking really good overall. Not to mention Cubs lefty Matthew Boyd, of course!

The positional group, as I said, was always going to be stacked (Pete Crow-Armstrong, Corbin Carroll, Aaron Judge, Gunnar Henderson, Cal Raleigh, Kyle Schwarber, Will Smith, Bobby Witt Jr., and more), so Team USA is in very good shape heading into the WBC. Pool play begins March 5 and 6, with Team USA in Pool B, together with Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, and Brazil. Gonna put my early bet on Teams USA and Mexico being the ones to make it out of that round.
