The actress, who played Caroline “Ma” Ingalls on the NBC drama series from 1974 to 1982, told People magazine that she didn’t always join the rest of the cast for fan events during the show’s heyday in the 1970s and ‘80s. “I had limited my interactions with fans very much,” Grassle, 83, said in the December 2025 interview. “I really didn't go to many events. I didn't hang out with everybody. I separated myself.”
Grassle previously told The New York Post that Landon refused her raise because he felt that the Caroline character wasn’t popular with fans and that her earnings should be the same as the child actors on the show. “I felt insulted as his co-star on a hit series,” she said. “I didn’t want to gouge anybody, but I expected a fair wage.”
Grassle told People that she began to really feel the love from fans four decades after Little House wrapped. “I started with social media, and I started going out to these events,“ she said. “I was astonished at what I learned about people's affection for the character of Caroline. I had no idea the depth of affection that people had for this character. It just filled my heart because I worked so hard to make something special out of that character, and there were many days that I did not look forward to going to work.”
