As Alabama football’s College Football Playoff first round clash with the Oklahoma Sooners approaches, several key players have either been rumored to be or are dealing with injuries. Here is the latest update for the team regarding injuries.
Ty Simpson, quarterback
Simpson led the quarterbacks in Monday’s practice session and was not listed on the team’s availability report on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Rumors of Simpson suffering from a back injury swirled in the days following the Crimson Tide’s 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC championship. He regressed in the back half of the regular season, throwing four interceptions in the team’s final four games, after throwing just one through its first nine.
“It’s that point in the season, everybody’s getting hit, everybody’s sore in some type of way,” Simpson said when asked about his health after the SEC championship.
While it is still possible that the star signal caller is dealing with an injury, it does not appear he is dealing with anything serious.
“I’m great,” Simpson said Monday. “I’m excited. It’s a great opportunity to play in the College Football Playoff. At this point in the season, I don’t know a team who is healthy at all, so fire me up. I’m ready to go.”
Jam Miller, running back
Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said Tuesday that he feels like Miller will be a “full-go” against Oklahoma.
The Crimson Tide’s lead tailback left his team’s 27-20 win over Auburn on crutches after suffering a lower leg injury. Two of the team’s losses this season came when Miller was out with an injury.
Miller returned to the practice field on Monday and led the team’s running backs through drills with quarterbacks. He was not listed on the team’s availability report after practicing on Tuesday.
His return will give a boost to the Crimson Tide’s 123rd-best rushing attack against a stout Sooners defense, which will return defensive lineman R Mason Thomas from injury.
Josh Cuevas, tight end
Head coach Kalen DeBoer said on Wednesday that Cuevas “will be available” against the Sooners.
He was listed as probable on Wednesday night’s availability report, after beginning the week listed as questionable.
The former Washington transfer and starting tight end missed the team’s final three games of the regular season after suffering a foot injury in practice. He had become a reliable target for Simpson this season.
Cuevas has the fifth-most receiving yards on the team this season, with 341, and is tied for third-most touchdowns, with four. He was a key figure on offense in the Crimson Tide’s 23-21 loss to Oklahoma in November, reeling in six catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.
While it is not known if Cuevas would play on a snap count, his return in any capacity would benefit the Crimson Tide’s offense.
“Josh is an excellent player,” Simpson said. “Not only is he great in the pass game, but he’s great in the run game as well.”
LT Overton, defensive lineman
DeBoer said Monday that Overton was doubtful to play, but that the team would continue to monitor him. Any hope for a return against Oklahoma was lost when he was ruled out on Tuesday.
The starting defensive lineman was a surprise midweek addition to the availability report ahead of the SEC championship and subsequently missed the game with an undisclosed injury. Overton is second on the team in sacks, and in his absence, the Crimson Tide defense recorded just one sack in the SEC championship.
Fans can expect defensive linemen Jordan Renaud — who started in place of Overton against Georgia — and Keon Keeley to see an increase in snaps at the bandit position. Defensive lineman James Smith and linebacker Yhonzae Pierre also could be rotated in at bandit.
