Sarah Ciobanu has announced her commitment to swim and study at the University of La Verne this fall. Ciobanu hails from Stockton, California, where she attends Lincoln High School and swims with Tiger Aquatics.
At the time of her commitment, Ciobanu said “I am so excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic journey at the University of La Verne! I’m incredibly grateful for my family, friends, and teammates who have supported me every step of the way throughout this process. A big thank you to Coach Nate, and Coach Angel for pushing me, believing in me, and helping me grow into the swimmer I am today. A special thank you to Coach Pat for giving me this amazing opportunity and welcoming me into the Leo family. I cannot wait for this next chapter!”
In an email to SwimSwam, she emphasized that the environment played a big part in the decision, saying, “The swim coaches were very inspiring and the college environment felt warm just like home.”

200 Freestyle: 2:05.78 500 Freestyle: 5:21.99 1650 Freestyle: 18:18.43 200 Backstroke: 2:16.27Ciobanu has dropped time in most of her primary events in each year of her career, most recently dropping from 2:07.21 to 2:05.78 in the 200 free, 5:27.65 to 5:21.99 in the 500 free, and 2:17.03 to 2:16.27 in the 200 back. Her best time of 18:18.43 in the mile was set in December 2024, but she has focused more on middle-distance races over the past few months.
Located in California, the University of La Verne is an NCAA Division III program in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The Leopards are led by head coach Pat Skehan, who has been at the helm of the program since 2012. The women placed ninth out of nine teams at the 2025 conference meet.
Ciobanu would have been the team’s top performer in the 500 free, 1650 free, and 200 back this past season, as well as second in the 200 free. Her best time in the 1650 would have placed 14th at the 2025 SCIAC Championships, scoring the team three points. Times of 1:59.10 (200 free), 5:20.36 (500 free), and 2:12.92 (200 back) were needed to make the consolation final in her other top events. She’s less than two seconds shy of scoring range in the 500 free, with nine months to continue improving before arriving on campus.
Ciobanu is the first publicized recruit in the Leopards’ 2026 recruiting class.
