In a move that felt like it was coming all offseason, the Atlanta Braves are finally signing 30-year-old free agent shortstop Ha-Seong Kim. It’s a one-year deal, but according to Jon Heyman, it’s for $20 million … a very good get for Kim, but also a sign of the weakness of the free agent middle-infield class.
Ha-Seong Kim (Back) to the Braves
Ha-Seong Kim had a bit of a strange year. Also a free agent last winter, Kim signed a two-year, $29M contract with the Rays that included an opt-out after the season. He began the year on the IL (shoulder surgery), only finally making his big league debut on July 3.
Unfortunately, he hit the IL again in August (back injury), playing his last game for the Rays on August 19. The Braves then picked him up off waivers and he hit .253/.316/.368 (91 wRC+) for them in September. At the end of the season, Kim declined a $16M player option, but is now sticking with the Braves for an extra $4M.
Frankly, this deal seems like an overpay.
Kim does have a couple of impressive seasons on record, especially 2022 (105 wRC+, 3.6 WAR) and 2023 (17 HRs, 38 SBs, 110 wRC+, 4.2 WAR), but he was injured and less impressive in 2024 and even more so last season. Still, he’s only 30 and can play a quality shortstop, which, again, in this market apparently means a whole lot.
I still do not think the Cubs should (or will) trade Nico Hoerner this offseason, but if this is what Ha-Seong Kim can get, you can absolutely bet Hoerner’s trade value at the moment is sky high (assuming the rest of the league also believes he can play shortstop).
Because Kim was a lesser free agent and widely expected to go back to the Braves, I don’t see this deal having much market impact on Bo Bichette, any other free agent, or the Cubs. Just a notable signing on a Monday night. Here’s the Braves press release.
