Sambalpur: The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has announced its full support and active participation in the district-wide bandh called by farmers’ organisations in Sambalpur on December 19, protesting alleged mismanagement and delays in paddy procurement under the BJP-led state government.
Former minister and Sambalpur district BJD president Rohit Pujari, in a press statement, accused the administration of large-scale irregularities in token distribution, delayed procurement, and systemic failures that have pushed farmers into severe distress during the crucial Kharif season.
Terming the BJP government’s approach as “anti-farmer,” Pujari alleged that cultivators are facing harassment and significant financial losses due to administrative apathy. He asserted that the BJD stands firmly with the farming community and will join the bandh to press for immediate corrective measures, including smooth and time-bound procurement, transparent token management, and urgent resolution of operational bottlenecks.
The bandh has been called by the Paschim Odisha Krushak Sangathan Samanwaya Samiti (POKSSS), an umbrella body of farmers’ organisations, amid growing unrest over inadequate token issuance despite mandis being operational. Farmers claim that thousands are unable to sell their produce, forcing them into distress sales below the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
