Troll wars are consuming the Magasphere. The most crazy conspiracy theorists are battling each other with zest and venom. The cabinet is squabbling and fighting for the President’s ear. Republican lawmakers are finally showing a spark of independence and some have turned on Donald Trump himself.
For sure, it’s entertaining to watch cultists go dark on each other, after years of baiting liberals. Broadcaster Tucker Carlson is being called “Qatarlson” for his closeness to Qatar and battering of Israel, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has been named Marjorie “Traitor” Greene by the President. There’s speculation on who’s for the chop in the new year: “ICE Barbie” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem? “War” Secretary Pete Hegseth? Pop-eyed FBI chief Kash “K$H” Patel (his merchandise dollar sign, not mine).
Let the voters eat cake, while Maga devours itself. Or as Trump put at an “affordability” rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, “You don’t need 37 dolls for your daughter. Two or three is nice.”
Like everything with Trump at its apex, the battle for attention and audience is often about money. Proximity to the President can lead to rich pickings. Winning eyeballs on YouTube can too.
But it’s also the nature of the beast. Maga brings chaos in its wake. This simple observation is more likely to bring about the destruction of Trump than anything positive the Democrats can think of (especially as they are out of ideas).
I’ve been watching Turning Point USA come under ever-intensifying attack from the right since Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September. He remains beatified but his widow, Erika, and his organisation are being trashed.
Erika has been assailed for being too glamorous, too gorgeous, too close to JD Vance in an on-stage hug and, mostly, too ambitious and determined to run Turning Point USA herself [revenue £63.7m in 2024].
Erika’s chief tormentor is Candace Owens, who has 5.5 million YouTube subscribers. Owens has made a series of preposterous, unfounded accusations about Turning Point USA and various dark forces allegedly involved in Kirk’s murder. The wilder her hot take, the bigger her audience.
Owens recently accused Erika of exhibiting “Megan Markle syndrome” of the kind where “you want privacy when you want it, you want publicity when you want it”.
A bunch of leading podcast bros have now rushed to Erika’s defence. It’s hilarious to see Tim Pool and Benny Johnson, who were revealed last year to have received large sums of money indirectly from Russian state media (they said they were duped), emerge as sober, patriotic champions of the truth.
Johnson has assailed Erika’s critics as “evil people monetising Charlie Kirk’s death”. Pool reportedly engaged in a sage discussion on this subject in his podcast with Gary “the Numbers Guy” Grinberg, a numerologist, who observed that Owens was born in 1989, “the Year of the Snake”.
But we’re to trust them when they say that certain conspiracies have gone too far. Good luck with that one, boys.
I’m reminded of a non-fiction book I read before the last election, Chaos Comes Calling by Sasha Abramsky. He focused on two small communities in Shasta County, California, and Sequim, Washington, where local offices were taken over by Maga fanatics during the pandemic.
Hundreds of demonstrators would show up outside the public health building in Sequim protesting against vaccine mandates. “People called for my hanging,” Dr Allison Berry, a public-spirited health official, said.
She received daily death threats. “Am I going to get killed? Am I going to get my daughter killed?” she wondered – rather as Marjorie Taylor Greene is wondering today.
In June 2020, armed locals near Forks, Washington, the remote setting of the Twilight novels, nearly lynched a mixed-race family which had camped in the woods in a converted school bus, after baseless rumours spread that migrants were being bussed into their area.
Today suspected illegal immigrants are hauled into vans by masked men acting for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and vanish into a US-made gulag.
In the end, the inhabitants of these communities revolted against the chaos and kicked the Magamaniacs out of office. In Sequim, the Maga mayor and other local officials were ousted in autumn 2023, while moderate Republicans beat Maga Republicans in primaries in Shasta County in spring 2024.
“They wanted a restoration of normalcy, of competence in government and civility in discourse,” Abramsky concluded.
Are we seeing the first stirrings of the same sanity? In Indiana last Thursday, Republican state lawmakers bucked Trump’s wishes, resisted threats of violence and voted against redrawing the congressional map of their state in their own party’s favour. They behaved with simple decency for nothing in return.
Trump brushed off this setback, which could cost Republicans their congressional majority in the mid-term elections. “I wasn’t working on it very hard,” he pretended. “I wasn’t very much involved.” But it was a humiliating defeat for a President used to getting his own way.

The latest AP/NORC poll shows Trump’s approval ratings dipping deeper into negative territory (61 per cent disapprove, only 36 per cent approve).
Republicans are trapped between thinking only Trump can either save or doom them and aren’t sure which way to turn. As Maga turns on itself, they are tuning out their own voters’ concerns.
