CHURCHVILLE, N.Y. — During the holiday season, dozens of organizations are honoring veterans who are no longer with us through the Wreaths Across America program.
Wreaths Across America places wreaths at the headstones of veterans at more than 4,900 locations across the U.S., and features at least two events here in Monroe County.
“It’s very important to recognize the service member who’ve served their country and have given it all,” Kenneth Juergens said.
Juergens, Commander of Post 954 of the American Legion and a 29-year veteran of the military, emphasized the program’s purpose.
“Wreaths Across America’s sole purpose is to recognize those sacrifices and to remember them,” Juergens said. “That’s why we ask everybody when they place a wreath onto the tombstone, that they make sure they say the veteran’s name and remember them.”
Juergens added that the ceremony also serves to teach and honor service members, and involve children to help them understand the importance of the event.
Juergens hopes to be honored in the same way when he passes.
“I think as a service member, it just warms my heart to know that, God forbid, when it’s my time, somebody will be there, remembering me, and somebody will say, thank you Ken, I appreciate what you did,” Juergens said.
