United Way of Weld County has named Kay and Tom Norton as the organization’s 2025 Humanitarians of the Year.
The award recognizes the couple’s “decades-long commitment to leadership, service, and strengthening communities across Weld County and Colorado,” according to a press release.
Tom Norton earned an engineering degree from Colorado State University and moved to Greeley in the 1960s. His career spanned more than 60 years, with 30 years as an engineer and 30 years in public service, including eight years as Greeley mayor, president of the Colorado Senate and director of the Colorado Department of Transportation.
Kay Norton attended Wellesley College and continued her education at the University of Denver College of Law. She moved to Greeley in 1976, focusing on environmental and land-use issues. Her legal work included tenures at Monfort of Colorado and ConAgra, later serving on the Board of Trustees at the University of Northern Colorado. She served as UNC’s president from 2002 to 2018.
The two “first met at a Weld County Commissioners hearing over a proposed feedlot expansion — a moment they now recall with humor and fondness, recognizing that their shared values and commitment to responsible community planning brought them together,” according to the release.
“Together, the Nortons embraced what they call the ‘three-legged stool’ of a healthy community: strong public leadership, a thriving private sector, and active philanthropy working in balance,’” according to the press release.
The couple has supported major fundraising projects for the Union Colony Civic Center, the Greeley Chamber of Commerce’s relocation to the train station, UNC’s arts and athletics programs, and a a scholarship fund for students committed to community service.
Their involvement with the United Way of Weld County began in the 1970s, with Tom Norton serving on the organization’s board from 2018 to 2024.
