Could Michael Jordan's former suburban mansion become a ‘tourist destination?' What a new proposal shows ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The new owner of Michael Jordan’s former suburban mansion is seeking to turn the property into a “tourist destination,” a city council agenda for an upcoming meeting showed.

The proposal comes months after now-owner John Cooper listed the 7.39-acre estate in Highland Park known as “Champions Point” on Airbnb Lux for “short-term luxury stays.“

According to the agenda, the Highland Park City Council Committee of the Whole is set to discuss a “proposed new land use” and re-zoning for Champions Point at the council meeting Monday. Several considerations were also listed, including neighbor impact, traffic, access, use, hours of operations and noise control.

“If there is an interest to entertain a more comprehensive plan review, the item would be placed on the next City Council agenda for further policy consideration,” the agenda said.

The 32,000-sqaure-foot home, which Jordan moved into in 1994, was sold in 2024 to Cooper for $9.5 million after more than a decade of going on-and-off the market. In 2012, its original listing price was $29.5 million.

According to a presentation, the proposal would change Champions Point to become a “fundamentally designed as a dynamic cultural institution where architecture, sports, and philanthropy will converge to deliver an immersive, multi-sensory experience focused entirely on personal transformation.”

The proposal went on to say the estate would have “living classrooms” for community events, and opportunities for organizations and youth programs to use the court, gym and other facilities. Tours would take place between the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. during May to October; and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. November through April; the proposal said, with six private evening gatherings per year and the opportunity for the park district and city to use the facility for up to 24 days a year.

As part of the plan, the iconic “23” gate would be removed from the entrance and placed inside the property.

“The front gate will be replaced with a similar, unmarked gate, eliminating the desire for visitors to queue or stop,” the propsal said.

It also includes adding shuttle bus service and possibly off-site parking to the nearby Nature Heller Center, along with a 120-foot path extension with lighting to get to the property.

“Champions Point is a unique destination designed to inspire personal transformation by inviting individuals to tap into their own inner greatness,” the presentation said. “Leveraging the tangible authenticity of a genuine, architecturally significant estate, the property offers an immersive experience and a connection to bespoke, intentional design that reflects a championship lifestyle.”

The discussion is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday. Some public comments expressing concern have already been submitted, the agenda showed.

NBC Chicago has reached out to the property owner, the City of Highland Park and the Park District for comment on the proposal.
