Prep sports weekly wrap-up: No need to wait for quality winter action ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

In many ways, the winter season — more than any other high school sports season — really feels like two seasons in one: pre-winter break and post-winter break.

And, even though the winter season is in its initial stages, and many of the most important matchups take place after the break, there are still plenty of games and competitions before the break worth marking on your calendar.

Here’s a look at five local prep sports events worth checking out before local athletes enter their winter breaks:

Candy Cane Invite

Also known as the Ugly Sweater Invite, Windsor’s annual pre-winter-break home girls swimming and diving meet takes place this weekend. The diving portion was slated for Friday, with swimming events happening Saturday.

The meet features a good mix of mostly northern Colorado squads — and plenty of candy canes being handed out to top performers.

Why wear a medal around your neck as a reward for a fine effort when you can eat your reward?

Roosevelt Invitational

Seventeen teams — many of them local — will pack themselves into Roosevelt’s home gym this Saturday.

The Roosevelt Invitational gives many top wrestlers a chance to see how they stack up early this season against other upper-tier wrestlers from the area and throughout the state.

No doubt, the Rough Riders, one of the top contenders in Class 4A, will wrestle with a lot of pride in their home venue.

The Roosevelt Invitational many not be the largest tournament of the winter season, but it certainly provides one of the best exhibitions of quality high school wrestling you’ll find this early in the season.

University at Northridge hoops

When you think intracity Greeley rivalries, Northridge-University may not be the first matchup that comes to mind.

Nonetheless, Nonetheless, there should be plenty of intrigue in the Grizzlies’ home gym when big-school Northridge tries to upset a pair of talented University squads on Dec. 18.

The girls game — featuring the defending 4A champion Bulldogs — takes placed at 5:30, followed by the boys game, around 7 p.m.

Resurrection Christian at Eaton hoops

Two of the area’s marquee basketball programs will square off in an early season showdown. Resurrection Christian — which won the 3A girls and boys titles a year ago — hit the road to take on a pair of Eaton programs that are seemingly always in the hunt for deep playoff runs.

The girls clash at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 19, followed by the boys matchup right afterwards, at about 7 p.m.

Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament

Not only is this widely regarded as the area’s biggest pre-break winter prep event, it is one of the biggest boys and girls high school wrestling tournaments in the state.

On Dec. 19-20, dozens of the best teams from Colorado — and even a handful from surrounding states — will converge on the Island Grove Events Center.

The annual tournament serves as a huge measuring stick heading into the break. And, for many wrestlers, winning this tournament is on par with topping the podium in the state tournament at Ball Arena in February.
