Upon Further Review, an Offensive Lineman Earned the Bears Best Player Grade From Week 14 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It was eye-opening to see linebacker T.J. Edwards as Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded Chicago Bears player after the team’s Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers. Nothing against Edwards, mind you. I thought that he played well in his return to the starting lineup after an extended absence while dealing with a broken hand and a problematic hamstring injury. And while Edwards graded out well in his return, an updated look at Bears player grades from last week revealed a different performer earning top honors.

Bears top graded offensive players per PFF:1. Joe Thuney 93.4 2. Luther Burden 76.3 (65% of snaps as the outside WR) 3. Cole Kmet 70.34. Ozzy Trapilo 79.25. D’Andre Swift 70.16. Drew Dalman 69.77. Colston Loveland 66.1 (72.7 receiving grade) #DaBears #Bears

Joe Thuney Earns Bears Best Grade in Week 14

It does not surprise me to see Joe Thuney with a top-rated player grade from Week 14. Heck, it does not surprise me to see Thuney’s name atop the list of Bears player grades in any week. The reality is that the Bears’ best player might be Joe Thuney. So while I realize that a team’s best player being an interior offensive lineman isn’t overly sexy, it sure as heck has made Chicago’s offense play its best.

We could point to so many factors when discussing the 2025 Bears turnaround. New coaches, a change in philsophies, and fresh faces on the roster have certainly helped matters. We could also point to the improved play of a handful of returning players. But you don’t have to look any further than what is happening in the trenches if you truly seek an answer to any questions about why Chicago’s football team is better in 2025 than it was in 2024. As far as I’m concerned, it begins and ends with what is happening in the trenches.

HOW COLD WILL IT GET FOR SUNDAY’S BEARS GAME VS. THE BROWNS?

The Bears’ three highest-graded players on offense are all offensive linemen. Center Drew Dalman (82.3) has the team’s best overall grade, with Thuney (78.3) and right tackle Darnell Wright (77.6) make up the big three up top. Meanwhile, running back D’Andre Swift (75.8) and rookie receiver Luther Burden III (75.6) round out the top-5 on the offensive side of the ball. Flipping over to the defensive side, safety Kevin Byard III (78.6) has the unit’s top grade. Linebackers T.J. Edwards (75.7) and Tremaine Edmunds (72.1), edge rusher Montez Sweat (69.0), and cornerback Nahshon Wright (63.4) round out the five best grades on defense.

Bears rookies are trying to steal the spotlight

One of my favorite types of posts to do at BN happen organically without much fanfare. And this is one of those posts. Because, when I got the ball rolling on this one, I wanted to do some deeper diving on the offensive line after seeing the Week 14 updated grades from Pro Football Focus. After watching porous offensive line play in recent years, I feel like it is important to write as much about the unit as possible. Perhaps I’ll still find time to discuss the line’s improved play this season later. But this post, which is rooted in discussing player grades, needs to turn its focus to a pair of Bears rookies.

Bears rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III is the Bears fifth-highest graded offensive player. The only skill position player with a better grade than Burden’s 75.6 is the 75.8 that D’Andre Swift owns. It would not surprise me to see Burden overtake Swift between now and the end of the season. Then again, with rookie tight end Colston Loveland (75.5) nipping at their heels, we could see a different rookie earn the top spot among Bears grades. Perhaps that gives us something extra to root for down the stretch.

I am someone who has always cheered for a good story. It brings life to those otherwise gray December days. The Bears making the playoffs this season would be a wonderful story to write. I’d be over the moon if I got a chance to write about a deep postseason run. Maybe I’ll get a chance to do that when the calendar flips to January. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. In the meantime, the Bears have something cooking with rookies Luther Burden III and Colston Loveland.

Don’t get it twisted. We will obviously continue to obsessively watch the Bears’ playoff position. But let’s not lose sight of the big picture. Because if Burden and Loveland continue developing at their current rate, these two 2025 NFL Draft picks will be cornerstones for the Bears for years to come.
