We are bordering on an obsessive Alex Bregman watch at this point, which means any new rumor or report is going to come in for some discussion here at Bleacher Nation. And today, we have a new report to share and (over)-analyze.
Alex Bregman Seeking Other Offers
According to a report at The Seattle Times, Alex Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, has “initiated discussions with the Mariners to express Bregman’s willingness to consider Seattle as a destination, an industry source told the Times.”
The report goes on to push back against the Mariners’ willingness to sign a free agent like Bregman, citing their preference to stay out of the high-end free agent market and “to give runway to their young infielders to grow into regular roles.”
So why do I find this particular rumor so interesting?
© John E. Sokolowski-Imagn ImagesWell, besides the fact that it’s just another team potentially involved in the market for Bregman (though, again, the gist of the report is that it’s NOT happening), I find the language here pretty unusual.
We hear about meetings between agents and teams all the time, but very rarely are these meetings so clearly framed as “the AGENT requested the meeting to insist upon signing (or offering to sign) his client.”
To me, that reads one of two ways, both of which pretty much end up in the same spot:
Perhaps Alex Bregman is not fielding the sort of interest he was hoping to receive when he opted out of his contract at the end of the year? It’s possible, and this could be his agent’s attempt to drum up some more suitors and up the action. It’s also reasonable for Boras to reach out to the Mariners, who explored a trade for Phillies’ 3B Alec Bohm last winter and traded at the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline for D-Backs 3B Eugenio Suarez, who is now a free agent. Maybe Alex Bregman is generally happy with the offers he has, but is hoping one of his few potential suitors adds a little bit more to get something done (assuming they heard and feared the Mariners jumping in to shake things up). There’s only a slight distinction there, but either (or both) of those theories is at least logical.
The only issue is, unless the Mariners are being intentionally deceptive through the media (not crazy, that’s kind of how this works), they don’t seem to be all that interested in signing Bregman. In fact, the report from The Seattle Times seemed to suggest re-signing Suarez was more in their wheelhouse, and even that was not particularly likely to go down.
Okay, that’s all for now. And stay tuned. There’s been a lot of Alex Bregman smoke the last two weeks. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if this came to a head sometime in the next few weeks.
