Johnson: D’Andre Swift Will Be Fine After ‘Egregious’ Fumble ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Chicago Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is a stickler for details and controllables, no matter the player. That was clear when he benched D’Andre Swift after Swift fumbled in the third quarter against the New York Jets on Sunday.

Swift was recently rewarded for his work with a new contract extension, a deal that is worth up to $33.75 million over the next three seasons. When the deal was announced, Johnson laid on the compliments. Swift is Johnson’s starting running back, and he’s the leader of his fan club, but ball security is a must.

Swift’s fumble against the Jets was his second of the season, but Johnson said on Wednesday that he doesn’t see the two as the same. Instead, he chalked up Swift’s Week 2 fumble to the Vikings doing what they do best, forcing turnovers, and called Swift’s recent fumble issues uncharacteristic.

“It’s very uncharacteristic,” Johnson said. “ I give Minnesota a lot of credit; that’s what they do, probably better than anybody in the NFL, just conscious of the ball and looking to punch it out. We cannot allow that to happen, and yet, that guy, he hit it right on the head, and it came right on out.”

As for last week’s fumble, and why it resulted in his starting running back being benched, Johnson was blunt:

“I think the one last week was egregious, though. That’s one that we can’t have. There are too many times where the ball is getting away from our body, and he knows that, and he takes a lot of pride in that, hence why it’s never been an issue over the course of his career. We’ve just got to tighten that up, and he’ll be just fine.”

Johnson Says D’Andre Swift Will Be Fine After “Egregious” Fumble; Kyle Monangai Good To Go

Kyle Monangai carried the bulk of the backfield load last week and didn’t skip a beat, rushing for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bears backfield has been an embarrassment of riches through the first month of the season, with Swift and Monangai becoming the first teammates in team history to post over 300 rushing yards through the first four weeks. Chicago’s two-headed backfield monster has been far and away the league’s best this season.

Johnson sounded on Wednesday as though Swift would return to his normal workload despite Sunday’s fumble and benching, and didn’t sound too worried about Monangai’s thumb injury suffered during the fourth quarter. So, all indications point to the status quo, and both Swift and Monangai will be full steam ahead on Sunday in Green Bay.

CHICAGO BEARS INJURY REPORT VS. GREEN BAY PACKERS

That’s bad news for the Packers, who have allowed 139 rushing yards per contest this season, the fifth-worst mark in the league, and just lost their best linebacker, Edgerrin Cooper, for the remainder of the season.
