Night 1 of swimming in Austin, Texas certainly started Winter Juniors – West off with a bang, with a meet record going down in the boys 200 medley relay courtesy of Waterloo Swimming and some quick swims throughout the field.

Rowan Cox sliced exactly a second off his 200 free best time leading off Longhorn Aquatics’ 800 free relay, and threw down a 20.19 fly split on the 200 medley relay to boot. The former was the fastest leadoff in the field and the only one under 1:35, while the latter was one of only two under 21 seconds. Both of those stand him in good stead for the rest of the meet – he was 1:35.37 and 20.98 a year ago, before going on to win the 100 and 200 fly in 45.74 and 1:44.69 respectively.

Tyler Porter split a rapid 19.42 anchoring Quicksilver Swim’s 200 medley relay, a tenth off his split from last year but a two-tenths of a second clear of the rest of the field. Andrew Maksymowski had the second-fastest split in 19.62 for Irvine Novaquatics, over a second under his flat-start best of 20.70.

Cate Pawlaski scorched to a breaststroke split of 26.86 on the Edina Swim Club’s girl’s 200 medley relay, the fastest in the field by nearly a second. Her previous best-ever split was over a second slower in 28.15 from the Minnesota Senior Short Course Championships, where she also swam her 100 breast entry time for this week of 1:02.01. She is the #14 seed in that 100 breast later in the week, but will surely be targeting the 60-second barrier and an ‘A’ final appearance now.

Gabi Brito led off the winning Beach Cities Alpha girl’s 200 medley team in 23.86, a best time on the 50 back of nearly a second and one of only four leadoffs under 25 seconds. She followed that up with her first swim under 1:47 in the 200 free, leading off the 800 free relay team in 1:46.70.

Michael Powell, Kai Joyner, and Kannen Crossland all dropped over ten seconds to place 3rd, 6th, and 7th respectively in the boy’s 1000 free. Malia Groen and Cassie Espinoza did the same to finish 7th and 8th in the girl’s event, but the biggest drop came from eventual winner Sydney Schoek. She hacked off 13.86 seconds to set a new meet record of 9:32.29, beating out favorite and top seed Kayla Han.
