But to Lala, it’s worth the cost, and it’s something that she’s been trying to teach Gibbs (Austin Stowell). He’s so shut down since the death of his wife and daughter that it’s really tough for him to let anybody in, including Lala. That emotional wall is another issue that’s confronted in this episode when Gibbs’ relationship with Diane Sterling (Kathleen Kenny) is tested when she gets a job in Los Angeles, and she asks him to move to the NIS L.A. office to be with her.

Monreal adds, “It's not an option for her either. This is a huge opportunity for her career-wise, this is something that she doesn't want to pass up, and neither one of them likes the idea of long distance, so they both have obstacles in the relationship in this episode.”

“We wanted to do something as meaningful as that and really have another character that was a special episode,” North says. “So, Gina came up with this criminal informant idea and this character Twitchy Tony, who I just fell in love with. I thought it was the most beautifully written script, and the execution by the actor and Mariel is just phenomenal.”

“I really wanted to give people a window into that time that we skipped over for Lala, where she is in recovery and we see the struggle it was for her to get back to work and all the things that had to line up in order for her to make that happen,” Monreal says. “It was something that we skipped over in the beginning in order to get to the place where we needed to get to in the premiere for her to come back, but to me, it was a really important time in the life of this character, so I didn't want to miss out on it.”

“That [tension] is part of who they are as people, it's built into their relationship the way that they interact with each other,” Monreal says. “That part of it doesn't go away, but also the love underneath it doesn't go away, as we've seen they've reconciled, but it's not easy. They don't always see eye to eye. They're two big personalities, so that makes for some pretty interesting conversations.”

“We never shy away from writing ourselves out of corners,” Monreal says. “That's kind of when we come up with our best stuff.”
