Emerging from highly competitive conference races, MEAC champ South Carolina State and SWAC champ Prairie View A&M will square off in the 10th Celebration Bowl on Dec. 13.
Their first all-time meeting in the Celebration Bowl couldn’t be on a bigger stage.
For the second straight season, the South Carolina State Bulldogs are returning to Atlanta to take aim on a season-ending victory and potential HBCU national title. Standing in their way are the Prairie View A&M Panthers, who have enjoyed a meteoric rise this season.
Their get-to-know-you matchup comes in Saturday’s 10th annual matchup of champions from the MEAC and the SWAC, the two HBCU conferences in FCS football.
South Carolina State coach Chennis Berry bathed in the lights of Mercedes-Benz Stadium last December but failed to walk away with the hardware in a loss to Jackson State.
More impressive is that he’s back with a 9-3 MEAC champion that at least offensively (due to graduation and transfer losses) looks completely different from the unit he brought in 2024. The Bulldogs claimed their second straight conference title with a 28-17 victory over Delaware State on Nov. 22, and have had three weeks of preparation for the Celebration Bowl.
Just like Berry, Prairie View A&M coach Tremaine Jackson led an HBCU Division II program to success before making a move up to the FCS. He took over a middling program that had not won a SWAC championship since 2009, then in his first season has guided the Panthers to a 10-3 record and a conference title.
A 23-21 victory at defending champion Jackson State landed the SWAC title this past Saturday, so the Celebration Bowl is a quick turnaround for the Panthers.

Notable – Film study is extremely important for the teams given it’s their first-ever meeting. Prairie View seem to be an offensive jack of all trades but a master of none. The Panthers are fourth in the SWAC in passing yards per game (233.7) and third in rushing yards per game (197.2). But they’re best at protecting the quarterback, allowing only eight sacks in 13 games. Meanwhile South Carolina State leads the MEAC in passing yards per game (286.0) and while throwing a conference-low seven interceptions. That’s helped the Bulldogs to being the best at converting on third down (47.2%). Juxtapose that with their pass defense, which has the most interceptions in the MEAC with 14, including three returned for touchdowns.
