First presented in 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors is an annual award given to individuals or groups for their lifetime contributions to American culture and the arts, including music, dance, theater, opera, film and television. Honorees were announced in August.
KISS stopped making new music and performing together live in 2023, but shortly afterwards announced that they would perform as digital avatars for fully virtual stage show performances, starting in Las Vegas in 2027.
The surviving members — Stanley, Simmons and Criss — attended the ceremony on Sunday night in Washington, D.C. to accept their honor, wearing nice tuxedos instead of spandex. Others recognized this year include George Strait, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Crawford and Gloria Gaynor.
