After a rollercoaster 2025 National Women’s Soccer League season that ended in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs with a 1-0 extra-time loss to the Portland Thorns, San Diego Wave FC came away as the World Sevens women’s tournament champion Sunday.
The club took the championship thanks to a 3-0 victory over Tigres UANL at Beyond Bancard Field in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
The Wave opened up the scoring in the 10th minute when defender Hanna Lundkvist forced a turnover and found teammate Makenzy Robbe inside the box who right-footed the ball past goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago.
The players kept up the defensive pressure and extended the lead early in the second-half after midfielder Gia Corley recovered possession and gave a perfect pass to forward Adriana Leon who was streaking down the left side and calmly tapped the ball into the back of the net.
Leon ended up putting the finishing touches one minute later with a solid strike from outside the box that found the bottom corner for the 3-0 final.
“We’re the champions, we won and we won it our way,” said San Diego Wave head coach Jonas Eidevall.
“I thought that after Portland that this would not be the end of our season. I thought it impossible that it’s going to end that way, and it was.”
The team got several outstanding performances throughout the three-day competition, but none greater than that of goalkeeper Dijana “DiDi” Haračić who came up with huge saves which included the penalty-kick shootout win over Club America on day two.
The Wave made it to the championship match after a resounding 5-1 win over Flamengo in the semifinals while Tigres, who were led by former SD Wave midfielder Maria Sanchez, made through after defeating Club America 2-1.
The seven-on-seven event for professional soccer clubs made its U.S. debut with teams from North, Central and South America after the first tournament was held in Portugal in May and featured mostly European teams.
Unlike traditional soccer, which has an 11-versus-11 format with 45-minute halves, the matches for this tournament were only 30 minutes with two 15-minute halves and played on a much smaller pitch. There were also no offsides and unlimited rolling substitutions were allowed, with the total prize purse for the tournament set at $5 million.
The Wave ended up with $2 million after being crowned the winners, which is to be split evenly between the players and the club.
This is the second tournament trophy for the San Diego Wave in less than two years with the first coming in the NWSL Challenge Cup final on March 15, 2024 when it defeated the reigning UKG NWSL champion Gotham FC 1-0 on an header by forward Alex Morgan in the 88th minute.
San Diego Wave will start its 2026 season in March in hopes of making a third trip to the postseason in the four years of the club’s existence.
