Given the fact that we know the Cubs are in on third baseman Alex Bregman, and given the reports that had the Cubs interested in Eugenio Suarez at the Trade Deadline, I have been waiting for some kind of rumor to connect the Cubs to Suarez this offseason. We can and will discuss the wisdom of such a match, but it only made sense that, at some point, the Cubs would have the conversation, right?
Right:
The Cubs continue to explore the third-base market in free agency, and Eugenio Suárez is one of the names to watch in the coming days, according to multiple sources.
— Francys Romero (@francysromeroFR) December 7, 2025As we’ve discussed generally, third base is perhaps the only spot realistically where the Cubs might add a big bat this offseason. Matt Shaw is a perfectly capable starter there, and should be a good player for a long time. But for 2026, specifically, it’s not hard to imagine the Cubs going with a big offense upgrade at third, while allowing Shaw to be a utility man. Less pressure on Shaw, a much-improved bench, a better offense, and some protection for 2027+ at second base if Nico Hoerner should depart in free agency. The Cubs don’t have to add a third baseman this offseason, but it would make sense if they did.
So, anyway, like I said, given all that and the past connection to Suarez, why wouldn’t there at least be some consideration given by the Cubs?
Suarez, 34, was of course a long-time terrorizer of the Cubs back in his Cincinnati Reds days, and, after fallen on some harder times, has seen a resurgence at the plate the last few years. Since 2022, Suarez has hit .238/.318/.461/119 wRC+, while hitting 132 homers in that time, including a whopping 49 this season. Defensively, he’s probably below-average at third base at this point in his career, but he’s far from a butcher. In total, he’s been worth just shy of 4.0 WAR on average these past four seasons. He’s been a stud.
Of course, at his age, it’s always a fair question whether the fall-off looms, and whether the home run outburst this season – which pretty much drove all of his production – was an aberration. It’s worth pointing out that, after his midseason trade to the Mariners, Suarez posted a mere .189/.255/.428/91 wRC+ slash line over the final 53 games, and was about average overall in 12 postseason games. (Though I suppose Alex Bregman was about the same over the second half, too.)
Contract projections on Eugenio Suarez are generally in the two or three-year, $20 to $25 million annual range, which sounds right to me. Shorter-term because of his age and the risk of fall-off, but very healthy AAV because of the offense he’s shown of late. Do I think the Cubs are going to commit $20+ million over multiple years to Suarez? I don’t, if I’m being honest. I like the idea of going after a big bat, but it just seems very unlikely to me that the Cubs will commit such a big chunk to a bat when there are still significant needs at the front of the rotation and in the bullpen. It’s why I remain dubious on the Bregman rumors, outside of the Cubs hanging around to pounce late if they can get a bargain (and/or if they line up a starting pitcher trade, as opposed to a free agent signing).
In other words, sure, I think the Cubs make sense as a Eugenio Suarez suitor, but mostly in a fall-back capacity. I think the idea that the Cubs would lead the market and make a push to sign him this week would be a significant surprise.
So, in other-other words, I wonder whether this report is coming from Suarez’s camp. Basically, something like wanting to pressure Team X to get a deal done this week, and using the Cubs’ sincerely-expressed (but fall-back-type) interest as a lever. Suddenly, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Suarez sign with some other team at the Winter Meetings on a three-year deal worth $60+ million.
(All that said, here’s a fun thing: if the Cubs did go after Eugenio Suarez, they could complete their offseason with an all-Suarez run. Eugenio for third base/big bat; Robert for back-end reliever; Ranger for front-half of rotation!)
