(Opinion) Sandi Squicquero: Christmas season at the Windsor Severance Food Pantry ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

The Christmas season is here and it is a time to give and support those in need in our community.

Although there are many ways to contribute this holiday season one place that comes to mind is near and dear to my heart.  The Windsor Severance Food Pantry plays a critical role in providing essential food and support to the residents of the Weld RE-4 School District.

Anyone residing in the Windsor-Severance area may drop in on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and receive a food box that includes 45 pounds of food, frozen meat and other daily necessities.  There are no eligibility requirements however you must show proof of residency.

Another service the pantry provides is on the first Wednesday of each month beginning at 10 a.m. when they host the Weld’s Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry at Faith Church 1020 Walnut St. in Windsor.  There are no eligibility requirements except proper proof of residence. Those who need food from the Mobile Food Pantry may show up at 8:30 a.m. and will be given a number to receive food at 10 a.m. The truck will remain on site until everyone has been served.

The Windsor Severance Food Pantry is a nonprofit organization and is an agency partner with the Weld Food Bank, which is also a nonprofit.   Your monetary donation to the Food Pantry is tax deductible because it is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.  In Colorado there are 114 cities with over 265 active food pantries. A complete list of cities are listed at foodpantries.org.

Beyond just providing services, food pantries serve as a community center that fosters communication with a welcoming environment.  Food pantries also play a role in combating food waste. Much of the food in restaurants, grocery stores and farms would alternatively go to waste if not redirected to the pantries. Not only do food pantries play a crucial role and impact in our communities they also transform family lives. In a YouTube presentation, “How Do Food Pantries Transform Family Lives? — Second Chance” a few areas were mentioned:

• Pantries are a resource in providing nutritious food and increase financial and food security.

• Pantries reduce stress, anxiety, depression and isolation related to food insecurity, thereby providing better mental health.

• Pantries help families re-enter society after incarceration.

• Pantries help families by giving food free to use limited income for other essential needs such as housing and health care by connecting to other community resources.

I would say pantries give families caring and hope with every box that is packed, each family or person is given a gift of hope for their immediate future.  Without caring and hope a person can have serious psychological, emotional and physical consequences.  When our well being is affected, we can face serious effects such as major depression, PTSD, social withdrawal and suicidal thoughts or actions.

How can you help? Contribute to food pantries this Christmas by:

• Donating money: Food pantries can purchase goods much cheaper than you can.

• Donate nonperishable items:  Rice, pasta, beans, oatmeal, cereal, pancake mix, canned goods, peanut Butter, jelly and syrup.

• Daily essentials: Bar soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, shampoo and toilet paper.

The Windsor Severance Food Pantry is located at 1051 Walnut St. Mailing address: P.O. Box 735, Windsor CO 80550, or you may call 970-329-1588 with any questions.

The pantry appreciates all the community donors who have donated in 2025 as well as the many volunteers who have unselfishly given their time and efforts to insure those in need are supported during this time and all year long. This year 148 food boxes were given to families in need for Thanksgiving with an estimate of that number or more to be given out for Christmas.  May each of you enjoy this holiday season.  A special thanks to our Executive  Director Brenda Heckman and our new Assistant Director Susan Steiner for a job well deserved and well done.  Merry Christmas to all!
