Chili is best served on the first day after initially making it. So I am making chili for Bears-Packers this afternoon before I head out to the suburbs for a friends and family holiday gathering. The recipe is from my friend Jim, who let me know that I could substitute turkey and chorizo for the ground beef and italian sausage that I usually use. I look forward to getting in the kitchen later.
Richard Sherman nailed it:I don’t think the impact Al Harris is having in Chicago is being talked about enough. His years in Dallas they were always amongst the league leaders in INTs and in Chicago it’s the same story.
— Richard Sherman (@RSherman_25) December 5, 2025 We, as a collective, are not talking enough about Al Harris and his impact to the Chicago Bears defense. Hiring him after the Cowboys dumped Mike McCarthy has helped a talented secondary play to its full potential. Each of the Bears’ top four cornerbacks (Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith) has missed multiple games due to injuries. Kudos to Harris for holding it together. And let’s not forget about the Nahshon Wright breakout. November’s NFC Defensive Player of the Month was with Harris in Dallas. Let this be a reminder that knowing the right people who can give you an opportunity is valuable.SUBSCRIBE TO THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
I loved reading this anecdote from Marquee’s Scott Bair, which helps frame the much-improved Bears running game:Somewhere in the late second or early third quarter of a Bears win over the Philadelphia Eagles, D’Andre Swift ran the wrong route.
Chicago’s veteran running back couldn’t remember when, but he went one direction into the flat when he should’ve gone in the other. Swift recognized the mistake right away and immediately held himself accountable to running backs coach Eric Bieniemy.
“He came over straight to me and said, ‘I screwed that up.’ OK then, on to the next one,” Bieniemy said Thursday. “But that’s a sign of growth. That’s a sign of leadership and holding himself accountable and making sure that everybody knows, ‘It wasn’t such and such. It was my fault.’ ”
One of the major storylines of the 2024 Bears season was that players were openly begging to be coached harder. One year later, the 2025 Bears are being coached harder — and it is paying off! Maybe we should use this as a reminder that when people are hard on us, it is often because they want the best for us. Mandatory Credit: Eric Hartline-Imagn Images Side note: The picture above is one of my favorite football images of the year. Super Bowl LIX hero Cooper DeJean is on his butt. Meanwhile, Eagles defender Byron Young is on his head and flipped upside down. This is a work of art that is deserving of hanging in someone’s man cave. Hiring Al Harris to coach defensive backs has been like striking gold. Bringing on Eric Bieniemy to coach running backs has revitalized a ground game that was stuck in the mud at this time last year. But Offensive Line Coach Dan Roushar coming out of retirement might be the biggest Bears coaching add this offseason. I love this quote from right tackle Darnell Wright (h/t Twitter user ImBearingDown) on how the new OL coach has helped him: “He was like “you’re already a good player, but there are some steps to make you a great player.”… I think he instilled a little bit of confidence. I’ve never really had a coach at that level talk to me like you can be a great player.” A CBS Sports NFL blurb on the Bears in their discussion of the playoff picture: “The Bears, who looked more scrappy than special for a long time, are seemingly proving to the naysayers that they are true contenders after knocking off the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles in convincing fashion. Up next will be the potentially tall task of holding off the NFC North-rival Packers.” Dianna Russini’s insider column at The Athletic is always a treat. I read it on Saturday mornings while I enjoy my coffee before I dive into Bullets. A fun nugget is this quote on coach speech coverage:“[T]he undisputed champion of locker room celebrations? Ben Johnson, with or without his shirt.
One head coach told me he even finds himself thinking about his potential postgame messaging on the drive to the game. ‘Honestly, I never really thought this much about it, but now with all the cameras, it’s no longer a private moment with my team. It’s for the world, and I feel like it’s getting competitive!’”
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wonders if the Vikings’ offense snap out of its funk. My answer: “No. And even if it could, it is too late to matter.” But with that being said, if the Vikings *ARE* going to figure it out, I hope they do it in Week 17 (vs. Lions) and Week 18 (vs. Packers). More Vikings: It is clear that the team is dumbing things down for quarterback J.J. McCarthy. And it makes me wonder if you’d rather have an emasculated version of Ben Johnson’s offense with Caleb Williams having better numbers or the full BJ experience, but it comes with the QB taking some bumps and bruises along the way? (FOX Sports) This is the time of year where college football is elite because anyone can have a special moment:Come for the James Madison AD telling students to stop throwing snowballs, stay for the Wayne Knight 73-yard touchdown run. Complete with a top-tier "JAMBALAYA!" Newman reference on the call from ESPN's Anish Shroff. ??️ #CFB #Seinfeld[image or embed]
